Just entered the little town of Chaing Kong after a 5 hour pickup truck journey from Chaing Mai - it's much quieter here than in Bangkok and Chaing Mai but there's a really nice vibe - very chilled out but quite a nice change from Bangkok etc...Arrived in Bangkok fine on Sun and met some really nice girls on my plane who got a cab with me to my hotel. Regretting the amount of stuff I have and the size of my bag- it is far too heavy! Met my intrepid group in the evening who are all really nice real mix of people - so far so good! I'm the youngest (just!) but most of the group are in their 20's. Bangkok is really really busy city - you would not believe the amount of people trying to sell you stuff at ridiculously cheap prices. Food and clothing stalls line the streets - it madness! Taxi's cost pennies and food is normally less that 2quid. Went on a boat ride down Bangkok on the first day - water was DISGUSTING and we were virtually sitting on top of it in a tiny boat run by a pick up truck engine (mum you would have hated it!) - was so much fun though if slightly upsetting seeing all the locals washing in the horrible water....loads more to see and do in Bangkok but not got much time to write so I'm skipping most stuff! Next got a night train to Chaing Mai - absolutely loved this city just a shame we didn't have longer here - I might come back after the intrepid tour finishes....night train was surprising really good - didn't get that much sleep but the beds were fine if a bit basic and bug- ridden. Night Markets in Chaing Mai were amazing but I mangaged to resist the urge to buy anything in the knowledge that it wouldn't fit in my bag! Did a cookery course which was ace (I am now an expert Thai cook - even spring rolls that you'll like Richard!) although after a massive breakfast we then had a 6 course meal to cook and eat between 11- 3 so we were all pretty stuffed by the end! It was our group leaders birthday yday so we all went out for dinner and drinks the the evening at a lovely river restaurant/bar - had a live band doing English band copies but rather than being cheesy they were so so good!
Think I'm having a Thai massage this evening- slightly scared as I've heard they are pretty rough! We are staying right on the river in Chaing Kong so I'm on Mosi alert...got my net up...
right run out of time so have to love you and leave you all - off on 6 hour boat journey to Laos tomorrow which is meant to be far more traditional than Thailand....xxx
