Hi Everyone!
Apparently I'm not too great at updating my blog - blame the internet in S.E Asia - in half the places they don't have it and where they do it is really really slow! Arrived in Vietnam a few days ago - Laos was amazing - done so many great things- travelled down the Mekong river for 2days with overnight stop in tiny remote village and visted tribal village -Mekong was breathtaking- Dad you would have loved it; went elephant trekking in Luang Prabang, Jungle trekking (yes there were snakes!), Swam under waterfalls, stayed in a rural homestay with the locals - the loo (if you can call it that) was pretty much a hole in the ground with a huge spider for company and the tap was apipe and a bucket - not quite what I'm used to!
Luang Prabang was definitely my favourite place in Laos- its a world heritage site so all the buildings are so so beautiful and there's no tack or anything else that crops up in cities - the massages were AMAZING - $2 for 1 hour of pure bliss! Quite a sleepy town (everywhere is shut by 12pm but really chilled & realaxing vibe that makes you want to stay forever!) Taken a ridiculous number of photos but internet is too slow to upload them (or I'm too impatient!). Spent 1 night in a very rural village - electricity is run on generator and runs out at 10pm emerging the town into darkness - villagers live in wooden huts and wash under 1 tap - such a different way of life but amazing to see. As soon as our boat arrived at the village all the young boys and men came running out to carry our bags up the hill - felt a little bit bad for the one carrying mine (its the heaviest!) but gave him a extra tip!
Vietnam is very different - after a night relaxing on a gorgeous boat in Halong bay we hit Hanoi. It's mad. Quite literally these people must be insane - they don't have any driving laws and to cross the road you have to just walk out in front of the traffic and hope it goes around you. Travelling on the motorways has your heart in your mouth the whole time - they overtake anything and everything (cows, people, bikes lorries, etc etc) and expect it to move over!
Everything is so so cheap - most meals are less than 2 quid and beer in Hanoi is 6p!People aren't as friendly as the Laos people but I'm not judging for a few more days.
Lots more to tell but no more time - got 13 hour overnight train tomorrow for next city which I think is a bit calmer than here.....I'll try to be better at updating the blog!
