Lovewells vs The World
From Robyn: This one was for me! I have always been fascinated by the shuttles and their missions, and if I failed to ever witness a launch, at least I got to see this incredible vehicle. The exhibition was very well done, heaps of info broken into manageable chunks. It was great to touch the tyres that landed Endeavour and see how trashed they got! And to watch the time lapse video of how they moved the shuttle to the science centre. There were so many other things to see too...I could have happily spent hours taking it all in. The pods the astronauts used to return to earth in are frankly terrifying...way too small! And we were lucky enough to also see the very newly installed propellant tank - about 4x the size of my house! But, after exploring a bit more science it was time for lunch (the California science centre has real food...with green vegetables!) then to hit the road en route to Las Vegas. However, it was a slower start than planned, as the memorial weekend traffic brought LA to a standstill. It was 2 hours of barely moving before the road cleared enough to get up some speed. Still, it gave us a good head start on our "truck spotting" bingo activity! We decided to go as far as Barstow, where we were able to find accommodation (another challenge this weekend). On the way we saw the bizarre naturally formed Mormon rocks, took a drive on part of Route 66, and stopped off at the Bottle Tree forest...a crazy but cool orchard of art that was great fun to explore. We finally made it to our hotel at 6pm...and were very impressed by the Comfort Suites, where you are warmly welcomed with fresh lemonade and cookies! Barstow is in the middle of nowhere in the desert. It's very much a super sized truck stop, and set up as such, so this hotel was a bit of an oasis. This could be the junk food capital of the world though... Just From the carpark I could see 12 different fast food chain outlets!
