We woke up bright and early today to be down in time for our included breakfast, which finished at 8.45!! After bread and jam and bananas we headed to the Gateway of India (through the Taj Hotel again!) and boarded a boat to the island of Elephanta.
The boat journey was good, it took around and hour and there was a lovely breeze (luckily there was no repeat of Zante for Sarah!). Upon arrival on Elephanta we decided to give the toy train ride a miss and walk to the main entrance to the island (where we had to pay an entrance tax!). From here it was up a hundred steps which were lined with stalls selling the usual beads, ornaments and tacky souvenirs. By this time the weather was boiling and Laura looked like she had just stepped out of the shower! We managed to climb the steps ok and refrain from using the man-powered chair lifts!
Once at the top we entered the caves which make the island famous. Within the hillside and caves were many carvings in the stone, most of which were crumbling. After a walk round we headed back down the steps, stopping halfway for a well-earned drink! We headed back to the boat and set off back to the mainland.
Following a return to the hotel for lunch, a cooldown and a quick kip! We walked into the downtown area for an ATM (again stopping in a department store for a cool down), before making our way to the Oval Maiden, which is a massive park in the centre of the city. the park was full of men and boys playing crickets with friends and we think we may have been the only women within the vicinity. We spent an hour or so in the park, walking round and watching the cricket before heading back to the hotel to get ready to check out early tomorrow (whilst having a look at the models on photo shoot which was taking place between our hotel and the Taj)! Tea in the canteen was beef stew but it wasn't as good as home!
