Yesterday was pretty much a chill out day, we did the sights we wanted to in Udaipur Wednesday so we decided to head out for a wonder, through the other bizars, to get to the city centre, find an ATM and generally check it out. We got some friut our way back to the old town, with a brief stop off at another jetty, a bit further down from where we watched the sunset yesterday, where women were doing their washing on the waters edge. We headed back to our hotel via some cute shops, down the quieter widing streets (we both agreed that didn't look a million miles away from St. Ives in Cornwall!), selling the usual stunning fabrics, clothes, bags and accessories.
Back at the hotel we enjoyed our rare spare time in the sun before having a dinner of vegetable kofta (balls of veg) in curry sauce. Shortly after we headed to the train station for our 7.45pm night train to Ahmedabad in our comfortable air conditioned sleeper carriages! The only problem we had was the old Indian lady who was scared for some strange reason (even with the door locked! - we felt fine!) and wouldn't go to sleep! - Laura even had to escort her to the loo! We did actually manage to get some kip and the eight journey felt like no time at all.
Slightly blurry-eyed, hair a state and masscara a-skew we arrived in Amedabad at 4.30am. We found our way to the platform our connecting train to Mumbai was going from and waiting until 7.00am, when it arrived and we could board. We heaved our heavy backpacks (why did we bring so much - it is all essential, though! - honest!) up onto the ludgage shelf and settled down for the journey. The seats weren't the wooden ones we were expecting, thank goodness! Although the seats were comfy, Sarah's bum still went numb and had to stand up and shift position everso often to wake up the backside! The journey was hot and sticky and peace was often interupted by Chai-whallers (tea sellers), beggars (including some she-men) and other people selling numerous things from magazine to batteries, drinks and ice-cream to hot food.
At 5.00pm today We finally reached Mumbai, formerly Bombay and after a quick wonder round we settled into our sticky room to watch Friends and Bend It Like Beckham!
