After a decent nights sleep even in the humidity of the room we woke up quite early to take our time getting ready before our 12pm check out time. A cold shower seemed to make little difference and we were sweating again before we left the room! We took a taxi across town, to the Colaba area, and to our new (and cheaper - 600 rupees including meals per night!) hotel which is run by the Salvation Army.
Our room is big and spacious but the cieling fan seemed to do nothing to cool it down! Our first port of call was the canteen for Chicken Stew (we wernt that hungry but we had paid for it!). We then headed into the 34 degree heat and onto the tourist attractions.
First stop was the Gateway to India where the last British troops in India left from, it was quite busy and we were hassled from people selling boat trips to gigantic balloons (what would we do with them!). We then headed to the museum and downtown area, which was a delight compared to other cities we have visited so far! There were british type period buildings and .... department stores!!! We obviously had to go in these to cool down! We walked around for ages taking in the scenery and the cosmopolitan fell (well in Indian terms anyway), before heading to the emporium of the Taj Palace Hotel!
The hotel is 5 star and is one of the best in the world - it is amazing inside and we could have sat and people-watched for ages (had we been dressed for the occassion!), instead Sarah made use of the lovely toilets and we wandered through the boutiques, stopping in Burberry and Fendi, amongst others.
Next we thought we would have a bit of exercise and walk to the lighthous at the end of the peninsula, bad mistake! After over an hours walk, mostly through a miltary area, we reached the end of the road and couldn't even see the lighthouse - so back we went to the hotel and a well earned cool down before a tea of soup, sausages and potatoes and the most amazing desert of what can only be described a mango puree - delicious!
Our legs are killing so there is not much planned for tonight - think we might sleep well!
