Into the wild!
Another epic drive in 'big foot' our RV into Jasper national park. We left the crazy town of blue river and headed on up the Yellowhead highway to the real mountains!
The drive to jasper had a real back-to- nature feel and with every corner we turned there was a new sight to gaze at in wonder. Our favourite was the sight of Mt Robson which towers like a misplaced Everest over the surrounding peaks and valleys. The rugged giant is just shy of 13000 ft! We were awestruck especially when we learnt the top of the mountain is visible for less than 14 days a year! Today was one of those days!
We then made a pit stop in Jasper town centre which is made up of one road of shops and restaurants! We were drawn to the pizzeria roof top terrace- fab views and fab pizza! We then treated ourselves to a tasty treat from bear paw bakery! I had an American cheese cake slice - no english imitations could ever compare to the real thing! Stefan went for his favourite - carrot cake! It brought tears to his eyes, I think he will be back for more!
After food, we stopped off at jasper tramway (cable car) which took us up to Whistlers Mountain. Not the same mountain we went up in whistler! We then decided to take a demanding walk up to the summit! The views were defiantly worth the shortness of breath! As it was a clear day we were treated to views of six mountain ranges, meandering rivers, glacier fed lakes and the town of jasper! The views were completely incomparable to any mountain views either of us have ever seen before! Wow- doesn't even come close!
Finally, we headed to our own piece of Canada! We are staying in a beautiful and secluded campsite which is out in the wilderness. We are currently sat on our own picnic bench beside Stefan's first fire as we write this. Our site is surrounded by forest and backs onto the Athabasca river, which we can hear rushing past. It is so peaceful and just stunning. My only concern is this is bear land- there are no fences - they stroll freely through the site!
So far our wildlife count is 2 black bears, 1 grizzly, 2 deer, 1 wolf, half a moose and lots of marmots. We hope to see more!!
Stefan is preparing marshmallows so this is it for now!
With love
