Road trip - day 34 - Thursday
Up early, Gite cleaned, packing done & on the road to Dinan market by 9.15am!
Weather wet, but with some sunny spells. Warm when the run is out.
Stopped for petrol & tyre pressure check on the way into a Dinan. Had a mooch around the market, probably because of the weather it was quiet with stalls & punters. Got a lovely almond croissant from the market & had coffee at a bar for breakfast.
Nipped into the old town to the biscuit shop - very last of the pressie shopping now complete!!
Set off for Mont St Michel. Parked in the enormous car park, had a loo stop in the visitor centre & queued for the shuttle bus. So many people & coach parties! Didn't really know what to expect on departure from the bus!
The bus stops on a temporary road shirt of the rock. There's a steady stream of people wending their way up to the rock with a building site to the right in front of the rock. This will be the terminus of the new road / causeway / shuttle bus / walkway - currently the new structure is up & they are working at breaking up the old car park & moving the silt from one side of the causeway to the other.
On arriving at the foot of the town it becomes clear that the hoards of people are all squeezing into the narrow street lined with bars, restaurants, gift shops & tat shops! The cobbled street rises steeply up, spiralling up the rock until steps start to rise up towards the abbey. So busy, people are jostling for photo opportunities. At the abbey itself it's a further 9euros to get into the church, we decide to take a much quieter path downwards & end up on the ramparts looking down onto the crowded cobbled entrance road. The weather has been awful, caught in a couple of short sharp rain showers we take shelter in a cafe. The prices are horrific; 11 euros for a very small hot chocolate & coffee. Interestingly the cafe has a street level exit on 3 levels! Decided to head back on the shuttle bus; parking plus shuttle bus - 12 euros.
Hotel was less than a mile away, nice clean room with wifi.
Set off to find a pizza place in Dol De Bretagne, a few miles away. Lovely old town with a big wide main street. Pizza was good, had pear tart with sauce & ice cream. Spectacular sunset on the way back.
