Road trip - day 35 - Friday
33rd wedding anniversary today!! Last day in France ;(
Slept well in the Auberge De La Baie: alarm set for 7.30am to go through the blog & recall our adventure .... just know we won't get chance to do it back home.
Missed breakfast, 10am before we are ready to vacate. Given the wind last night there is only a bit of tree debris on the car park & the day looks calm cloudy but nicely fresh. Forecast is rain ..... but given the recent forecasts about strong winds & orages it's not too bad!
The first coach loads are passing the Auberge on the way to Mont St Michel.
Went around to the Cherbourgh peninsula via Avranche, around the famous roundabout with the memorial & the tank passing through to Granville. We had a good drive through the town & down towards the quay, along the coast past a few beaches & then back above the busy fishing port to Haute Ville. Parked on the road & took the road through to the Roc view point, lots of German bunkers & great views of the coast & out to sea. On the way back to the car stopped for a hot chocolate & earl grey tea at the aquarium tea shop. They had a well disguised toilet - just what was needed! Decided to have lunch at the proper time today having missed breakfast time completely. Down at the port we found a small cafe / creperie & had galettes - scallop onion & mushroom for me & chèvre & mushroom for G.
Back on the road to cover some distance up the peninsula, headed for Carteret on the coast opposite to Jersey. Very lovely town & small marina & port. Had a drink in a very nice wine bar. Headed off to the Cap de Carteret, a headland with a lighthouse & a rather nice but strange expo of large wildlife photos & their origin on the peninsula .... and an even better view of Jersey! The sky looks a bit wet & stormy now over in that direction.
Arrived in Cherbourg after following the car ferries signs down the valley, 6.30pm so still got a short while to kill - boarding no later than 8pm & sailing at 8.45pm. Really want to be at the port at 7pm to 7.30pm. Followed signs for Cite de la Mer; it's closed but is an enormous exhibition space with a a Titanic expo & a submarine that we could see from the car park.
Headed for the car ferries & didn't have long to wait before we we went through customs & passport controls. Although we had left the car in a queue to go to the terminal building & came back to find it all alone ;)
Boarded & found seats - small fast cat & quite comfy looking. Surprisingly I wasn't feeling seasick after taking a sleeping tablet! Extremely sad & emotional to wave goodbye to France
Got to Portsmouth in the dark & found the premier inn; it had an extension & we were as far away as possible from reception .... miles of corridors - good job I hadn't forgotten anything!! Straight to bed (on a new comfy mattress) - slept so so well!!
