Day 71 - We woke up a bit later today at about 7am but the tent was still unbreathable so we just went straight up for breakfast. We sat with Amy and Ian chatting for a bit and sauntered down to the tent to pack. We then realised the bus that would take us to the coach terminal left in 5 minutes. It was picking up an earlier bus first so had to leave an hour early. We just say managed it and after waiting around a while we were on our way. We pulled up and spotted our host Michael for the next 3 nights. It was great that he picked us up and took us to his pad. It was brilliant, proper man pad, big tv, surround system, corner sofa- the lot! Michael seemed like a nice guy and we settled in and just chilled out for the rest of the day basking under the air con. Michael went out for a meal with his mates for a sort of stag do. After the meal he dropped by and asked if we fancied a few drinks in town. After a quick costume change we drove into town and went to a lovely riverside bar. The stag and his mates turned up and Eve was feeling very awkward to say the least but it wasn't anything like a stag do from home. We talked to his mates who were all really canny and had a refreshing bottle of beer/cider or two. They pulled out some novelty dare cards for the stag do, none of which he succeeded in and moved to a different bar. The next one was very cheesy and in a saloon style, very much like Arizona in Sunderland. It was a great night and we both had a right laugh and turned in just after midnight.
Day 72 We slept well actually finding the sofa very comfortable and after breakfast went in search of Castle Hill. The hill is a large monolith- a big big rock! It was reddish in colour similar to Uluru but nowhere near as large in comparison. We were sweating, it was unthinkably humid with the temperature well into the thirty's. We had drank half our water and even thought of turning back and all we had done was walk up the road to the foot of the hill! We powered on and took it nice and slow with regular breaks, mainly to mop the sweat up. It only took us about 40 minutes but was no easy feat and were happy once we got to the top. It paid off. The reward was worth achieving giving us 360 degree views of the city and looking down onto the beach and port. The hill was in the centre of the city so behind us we could even see as far as the Air Force base. We spoke to a few travellers at the lookout point and after drinking the water taps dry started our descent. It took a third the time to reach the bottom and went straight into the lovely Queens Gardens, a botanical garden showcasing plants and trees from different tropical regions. We walked down to the Esplanade and looked around some of the shops and looked at the lunch menus, knowing we couldn't afford any of it! After a long tiring day we were starved and thought we'd make Michael a traditional English meal- a curry! He's not a spice lover so we had to settle for butter chicken. We think he enjoyed it but not sure how fast he will order one in the future.
Day 73 It was another swelteringly hot day and there is only one think to do on days like this. Go to the lagoon and sunbathe. It was only a 15 minute walk and we were on the esplanade and at the lagoon. It was brilliant, a man made lagoon with sand and palm trees lining the edge, much like the others we'd seen so far but this was filled with water from the sea. So we slapped the sun cream on and caught some rays, then went for a swim and after a couple of hours we got bored so set off along the esplanade. It was very long and took around 30 minutes to walk although it was nice and breezy so the heat wasn't too unbearable. We walked right along to the harbour and I had a little nap as Eve read her book. We walked back along and up to the house, Michael was in so we just chatted and we showed him so British comedy clips of Peter Kay and Fawlty Towers- becoming a common occurrence Michael offered to cook dinner and ended up buying T-bone steaks, which we didn't argue with! He made a Danish feta and avocado salad to go with it and my god did it go down a treat. After some Skyping we were off to sleep.
