Day 98- We were up pretty early so we could check out for ten and catch our bus at eleven. The bus journey lasted about an hour and a half but we seen some beautiful scenery on the way so it wasn't to bad. We pulled into Nimbin and immediately seen why it has the reputation it has got- Hippies! It was only a very small street with several shops on it but it was crazy. We didn't stop long as the bus driver offered to take us to our hostel which was a 5 minute drive down the road so we jumped back on. Our hostel was called Rainbow Retreat and was more of a bush camp than hostel. As we walked up the drive we were greeted by what looked like a farmer on a tractor and who turned out to be the owner. We walked up with a Japanese lad who said he worked there and the owner told him to take us to the Woodstock room. It was in a fantastic area, surrounded by nothing but trees and a small river. We dropped our stuff off and strolled back into the village, we were asked on numerous occasions if we would like any 'grass', we went into the bizarre Nimbin Museum. It was only small but was jam-packed full of hippie paraphernalia and psychedelic junk! There was a lot of furniture, posters, plaques and ornaments dating from the 60's and endless amounts of crazy and deluded mottos and phrases. We came out wondering how much more surreal this place could get, only for us to cross the road and be faced with the HEMP embassy. HEMP stands for Help End Marijuana Prohibition and was filled with cannabis merchandise and stories of how the Police are the criminals for making the use of a natural plant illegal. We had a coffee next door and took a minute to take it all in- which to be honest we couldn't. We had a look around all the shops- which Eve loved as it was full of fairy things and then picked up some food for a curry. We had a nice walk back and caught up with the blog and read our books. We knocked up a potato and veg curry with rice and I managed to fry some poppadoms in the smallest amount of oil. It went down a treat and then we watched a bit of TV before bed.
Day 99- It was pretty cold during the night as we were now much further inland and slightly higher than sea level, plus our dorm was a wooden shack with a curtain for a door. The ants and spiders tried their best to keep us warm though by snuggling in with us. After a shower and breakfast we just chilled out in the camp and managed to use the one computer the owner allowed on site. He was a strong believer in all things natural and minimal amounts of technology, however we all need a Facebook hit- hippies included. We waited at the bottom of the bank to try and catch the shuttle as it dropped people off so we could load our bags on, meaning we didnt have to carry them in to the centre. We waited around the site and had some lunch before walking over to the bus and heading back to Byron Bay. We slept most of the way back and then we had about 4 hours to pass so found good old PeterPans. There was a little market on so we had a wander round and got some shopping in at the supermarket. The bus journey wasn't bad, it was dark when we left at 9pm and was nice to see so many houses lit up and decorated to extremes in Santas and Reindeer's! We arrived into Yamba at 11pm and we had booked a female and male 10 bed dorm each as there was nothing left. So we were delighted when we were told we had been upgraded to a private double!
