Day 95- We checked out of Surfers paradise and got the bus to Byron bay. The bus only took an hour or two but because we were moving from Queensland to New South Wales we lost an hour of time due to the time difference so we arrived about 2pm. We checked in to our hostel, dropped our bags and headed straight out. We had loads to do so headed straight to Peterpan's to use the internet. We knew we had to get our buses booked for the rest of the coast as they were going fast due to Christmas time quickly approaching. We went to the supermarket opposite and got some shopping in, there was a free BBQ at the hostel so we didn't bother getting anything for our tea. The hostel was doing free club entry and drink to some bar called Woody's so we decided to have a night out. After we got showered and dressed up we headed down to the terrace for our free BBQ. We were disappointed to say the least after queueing we arrived at a pan where we were given 1 slice of bread and 1 sausage, not even a BBQ'd sausage. It didn't even touch the sides so we gave in to a cheap Tuesday's Domino's pizza. We saw Louis one of the German guy's we had couchsurfed with in Noosa and we found out he had hitch-hiked from Noosa -mad. We bought a box of goon (wine) and got a little bit drunk. We headed down to the nightclub with the hostel and had a few more drinks and a good dance - was a really good night. Every time you bought a drink you were given a raffle ticket to win a skydive so we sat down for the winner to be announced. Before I got a chance to find out Lloyd started to nod off so after we found out we hadn't won we stumbled back to the hostel!
Day 96- We were pretty hungover, I woke to find Lloyd had somehow at some point in the night made it in to my bed. We had to check out as we were moving in to another room so we had to be up by 9:30am. We forgot to buy bread from the supermarket the day before so we had a walk to Aldi's and Woolworths, then back to the hostel to eat breakfast. We decided to head down to the beach so we spent most of the morning sunbathing and dipping in and out of the sea. We went back to the hostel for some lunch and signed up for a lighthouse walk. The walk took us right along the beach which was pretty far, then up a few paths, they stopped at loads of lovely lookout points along the way and we got the chance to stand on the most easterly point of Australia. It was amazing but so windy the waves crashing against the sides of the cliffs were massive. The lighthouse at the top was beautiful and the views were perfect, with even a rainbow over the sea. We walked back and all together it took about 2 and a half hours. We had signed up for a surf lesson in the morning so after tea we had a much needed early night.
Day 97- We were up very early as we had to check out and in to another room again before our surf lesson. We were both feeling pretty excited about the lesson as we walked along to the mojo surf shop. Once the group was in the mini-van we went in search for the perfect place to surf. It seemed like we had picked the worst day, everywhere we went was far too rough, massive waves with huge swells. After driving an hour down the coast we finally stopped at a beach which the instructor said would be hard but ok. After been given our boards and showed a few exercises we started our lesson. We were shown how to paddle out, how and when to jump up. We got straight in to the water which was freezing and started to battle the huge waves to get in to the sea- this was the hardest part. The waves crashed over you and we were finding it hard to catch our breath between waves. We both managed to stand on our boards pretty quickly, the instructors helped now and again to make sure you were getting the best waves, getting in to the sea and giving you advice. We both did really well, getting on our boards about 8 or 9 times but we were shattered, battling the waves was hard! The bus took us back to Byron and we had our much needed lunch, we were still buzzing of our morning. We walked along to Peterpan's to get our accommodation sorted for the next night in Nimbin then went back to the hostel to check in again. We showered, my hair was in knots, my hair bobble had came out in the waves and my hair was mad tatty, took ages to brush it all out, we got dressed and headed to the travel desk down stairs to book our bus to Nimbin. We were told there was a travel trivia game starting and they were offering free wine, cheese and crackers, you don't need to offer us free stuff twice, we settled down with a glass of wine. About 40 people turned up for the quiz and after 20 or so questions Lloyd was declared the winner...yheahyyy. He won one free night anywhere in Australia in their hostel chain, so that will come in handy down the coast. We decided after that we would go out to the night club everyone was going to, so we made some tea and drank our goon we had left over. We sat with a few people from our room and that we had met during our stay. The nightclub they were going to wasn't far and was called Cocomangas and we got a free drink on entry (some fruit juice in a jam jar). The music was horrific, we could not stand it and left after about 20min, most of the people on our table also left to go to other places but we just headed back to hostel feeling exhausted after our busy day.
