Ok, a bit more of an update about what we got up to in Jaisalmer. After our last internet visit we bumped into a few people from the group and went for some food at a Tibetan rooftop restaurant. Then headed back to the hotel to get ready for a night out on the town! Being us we were not that thrilled at the fact that we were taken to a local shop to hire traditional 'local costume' for the night out. Yes, picture this (sorry no photos yet!) Lisa in a sari and Ed wearing linen trousers and top and a lovely multi-coloured turban!! We then got an autorickshaw to the 'Desert Boys' restaurant, the locals all laughed at us as we walked through the town, however the restaurant was lovely and so was the curry. We sat outside in the garden to eat and the evening was finished off with traditional dancing which we both cleverly avoided (well, Lisa did get dragged up for a while but then swiftly became official photographer to avoid further embarrasment).
Thursday 5 October - Had a wander into town, we both bought suitable safari gear (long sleeved top and scarf) in preparation for the camel safari. We went with a couple of others from the group to Gadisar Lake - amazing to see so much water in the middle of the Thar Desert. At 3pm we set out on the safari - an hour in a jeep to the camel meeting point. We then had a two hour camel ride until we reached our camping point in the sand dunes. Here we were fed and watered by the camel drivers who later set up a camp fire for us. A group of four locals came and entertained us with their folk music and traditional dancing. Despite Ed's best attempts at faking illness with a bad foot, we both got up and had a little dance. We then slept under the stars (Lisa saw a shooting star and made a wish....... that she was back home - not really!!). However it was a cold and windy night, disturbed by thoughts of scorpions and dung beetles, so we did not get much sleep. The blankets also stank of camels! 7am we were woken with chai and breakfast. We then headed back on the camels - Ed made his camel run which was great. Lisa tried to forget how uncomfortable it was by listening to her MP3 player which she kindly showed to her camel driver who decided to keep it for half an hour! What he thought of Kasabian, Kaiser Chiefs and other english indie music we shall never know. Ed loved the camel ride, especially the fast bit, Lisa didn't and has the blisters to prove it!
