After a hearty breakfast we had another long bus journey to Pushkar. There were another few hairy moments where the bus missed a few lorries by millimetres - they just swerve away at the very last second! We changed buses and got a more local bus for the last 45 minutes. There was one bus which had about 30 people on the roof all shouting and waving at us ........ which turned out to be our bus! Luckily there were actually some seats left, it's cheaper to sit on the roof and some get it for free as they jump on as the bus starts moving.
We arrived in Pushkar at about 3.30pm. It is one of hinduisms holiest towns - pilgrims flock here to wash in the holy lake. You can't get closer than 40 feet without having to remove your shoes. Alcohol, meat and eggs are banned but drugs don't seem to be as there are plenty of cafes and restaurants serving 'special' food and drink (which are told contain drugs - we wouldn't try them of course!). It is the famous camel fair in a few weeks so the locals are starting to prepare and there are already lines of tents erected on the outskirts of the town. Other than that Pushkar appears to be a hippy town, full of cheap backpacker clothes and people! Our hotel was not as bad as expected, just very basic but still with running water and flushing toilet!
This morning we headed out at 5am for a walk up a big hill to the Savitri temple to watch the sun rise. There were loads of monkeys at the top and we had a mug of chai. The locals put us to shame walking up there in their bare feet, quickly worshipping at the temple, then going back down again.
