We arrived at a hideous tour of 6am, when Trelew was still in darkness. We bought our bus tickets to Rio Gallegos immediately and headed outside the bus Terminal to match a cab. When we finally got one, the cab driver was very cross as we didnt realise the hotel was justa cross the park. Oops. He dropped us off, but it looked like a horror film hotel. It was all delapidated and covered in graffiti. We were so scared that we left and found another one that was just around the corner.
We arrived and got charged what we felt was a heinous amount for the room we were given. In the basement of the hotel, it had no window and looked like a caravan incide. The shower never had any hot water and we were very depressed. Since it was still quite early we went to bed and got up a few hours later in search of another hotel.
We went to tourist information who had a list of all the prices, and it turned out the hotel was charging us the correct price. It was also the cheapest in town. We want third World prices back!
We went shopping in the supermarket and returned to our hotel to contemplate suicide. Later in the day we visited a paleontological museum which was very impressive. It had massive dinosaur skeletons ande ven bigger amonite fossils. We also got to match a nice BBC Horizon show about dinosaurs. Then we went to the old train station, which was now a museum with some old welsh staff, like a glass breast bottle. Nice!
The next day we visited a nearby welsh settlement called Gaiman (haha). Heres Wikipedia:
Gaiman is a cultural and demographic centre of the region known in Welsh as Y Wladfa, in which Welsh-Argentinians are concentrated. The town was founded in 1874 by settlers from Wales and the Central of Chubut Railway arrived in 1908 connecting it to Trelew. Several hundred people in the region have conserved the use of the Welsh language alongside Spanish. The 'Eisteddfod de Chubut', a Welsh cultural festival, is held here every October. The town is welcoming of tourists, and Welsh teahouses (tai tare numerous. The Museo Histo Regional (Historical Regional Museum) commemorates local history (the signs are bilingual in Spanish and Welsh). There are a number of Welsh Protestant chapels, of which the largest is Capel Bethel.
When we arrived, it appeared everything was closed. However, we soon found the tourist office and got shown some things to do. We visited a strange recyled garden thing which was littered with flowers made out of plastic bottles and Citroen 2CVs covered in crushed cans. We also had a tradicional welsh tea, where Charlie caused a scene, when instead of burping quietly, a loud shouting noise came out instead. Luckily the tea room was empty. We visited another welsh museum run by a nice old granja. Charlie tried to be nice by saying she still had her welsh accent. "WELSH IS MY FIRST LANGUAGE; I HAD TO LEARN ENGLISH YOU KNOW" she spat back. Granja then tried to talk to us for 10 hours, but our bus was due so we tried to escape. Luckily one of her granjad friends came in so we ran away.
When we returned to Trelew we complained that our shower didnt work. The kulak mumbled something then changad our rooms. We were shown to the topo f the hotel where our room had a Windows and the shower was hot. Depresiifted! That night we went out for take out pizza and looked forward to leaving.
Mark out of 10 = 4.5
Final thoughts: A bit hideous but nice Welsh tea at the nearby settlement town.
Next time... El Calafate
