Right boys and girls prepare yourself for a large journal entry as we stayed on Koh Phangan for a week and got up to a loads of stuff. Probably best to go to the bogs first as you don't want to interupt your reading pleasure with any toilet breaks.
Once we landed on Koh Phangan we immediately liked it much better than Samui, even though we stayed in the most built up place, Haad Rin, it was so much of a better atmosphere, with the place full of young backpackers. We had decided that we would arrive about a week early for the full moon party as we had heard that accomodation gets booked up and we were to find out that even that far in advance things were pretty busy. The only place we could get was this scummy little hole right above a 7 eleven on the main street, with the added bonus of ants in the bed! Luckily enough though we managed to find another palce the next day and this was to be our 'home' for the next 6 nights.
On our first day we decided to do a cooking course, this was based in our new guest house "same-same". It was a one day course and we got to choose to make 4 dishs, Spring Rolls, Pad Thai, Green Curry & Prawns in Pepper and Garlic. We has been saying for ages that we wanted to do a course and afterwards we were glad we choose this place as it was really well organised and very comprehensive. The food we made was amazing and even though it was made by our own fair hands, it was probably the best grub we have had on our whole trip. The bird teaching us gave us a receipe book, so when we are back in blighty we will have to treat everyone to our new skills, requests can be made via the message page.
Another little course we tried was a begineers Muay Thai class (kickboxing). This was run by a local gym and a hard as nails little kiwi woman. Man this bird scared the crap out of me! We were only doing the basic's of stance, how to punch/kick/elbow/knee but i was still bricking it. Later on in the session we were doing pad work and the instructor was holding the pads and everytime now and then she would mutter under her breath "i'm not worried about you", implying she could kick my ass easily, somthing which i would not disagree! She even at one point said if i gave her 500 baht i could knock her out!!! As for linz she was evil, i think she took 7 weeks of hanging around with me and turned it into aggression, Jean Claude Van Damn would have been proud!
Sticking with the kick boxing theme, one evening we went to watch a night of proper kickboxing, this was awesome. These blokes are f-ing solid and the punishment they were dishing out to each other was brutal. Really good atmosphere with everyone in the crowd baying for blood. The best bit though was when a flight kicked off in the crowd between two thai guys, at ont point you didn't know where to look, ring or crowd!
As for the rest of the daytime we spent in Koh Phangan this was generally spent on the beach attempting to play volleyball and hangover days in bars where you can literally lie on the floor and watch movies all day, one point of note, never watch the film 'Just Friends', proper rubbish!
As for the evenings we had some awesome nigths out. Excluding the Full Moon party the best other night out we had was when we hit the beach and got chatting to a random bunch of people. A half Israeli / South African called Kev, a German called Sven and a Bird form the Isle of Man, random bunch! It was so funny though this Kev guys was cracking us up as he was trying it on with the Isle of Man bird and kept called her a "dirty sl*t". This guy was so confident he made Aves look timid! But then randomly he told us that until only a week ago he was virgin (he was 25) and had lost his cherry to two Thai girls, I guess he was just riding a crest of a wave and now we know where his confidence came from. Most of the night we all cut some serious shapes and to be honest just like at home i believe i ruled the dance floor.
Every night on the beach they played games and one night i joined in with this game where you had a balloon attached to your leg and you had to survive without other people popping your balloon. To start off with there was around 30 people playing and being the a master tactical thinking i thought why don't i just hang back and let everyone else fight it out, this worked a treat and i made it all the way to the final, where i was against this Sweedish he-she (she made Jo Brand look femenine). The first thing this he-she did was boot me straight in the shin, man i thought this bird had broke my leg, i have still got the lump today! After that there was no holds barred and i eventually elbowed and barged her enough that she fell on her balloon and it burst, i was the champion! My prize a bucket of Samsong (whisky) & redbull, lovely!
Finally we come to the reason for being in Koh Phangan, the full moon party. All i can say is that it is wicked and something everyone should experience. We started off at our guest house, which had a live band and then headed to the reggae bar where we got painted up! Linz loved this so much that she started to painting other people and ended up spending around half an hour painting this Canadian guy. What she did was pretty cool, although the guy did resemble the joker from batman! After this we headed down to the beach, the place was pumping. People every where busting some serious moves. We joined in and felt right at home with our illminous faces flashing in the lights. One of the things which cracked me up though was the amount of people passed out on the beach, Benny you would have been in heaven! They even had a safe zone set up so people could sleep without being robbed! As the night went on we were luckily enough to get a perfect sunrise, man this thing took our breath away. Check out the photos, top quality.
Right hope your all still awake but I had to lay it all out like that as we got up to loads and me mum would moan if i didn't tell her everything! This was out last stop in Thailand and its now on to Malaysia, can't believe we have been away near on 8 weeks now, arrrraghhh will be home before we know it, now thats a sobering thought!
