Grant and Linz's Big Adventure
Hey All, here's the latest....
Our travels took us on a long old bus journey back to Bangkok next and while there we had a bizarre chance meeting with a guy I used to go to school with, Chris Lane ("hey Mr Chris!") He is living and working in Bangkok and we just bumped into him on the Khao San Road - small world eh! Had a few Chang's with him then, feeling slightly worse for wear I have to say, we went in search of the bus station.
So we got our connecting bus to our next proper destination which was Kanchanaburi, where the Bridge over the River Kwai is. We went to visit the 'Death Railway' museum first which explains the history behind the building on the bridge and the Thailand to Burma Railway. This museum was very informative and well set up and had accounts from soldiers at the time which were very moving and humbling to read. It was good to learn about this before we visited the Bridge as it helped put it into perspective. The museum is also based next to a cemetry where around 10,000 POW's were buried so it really makes you think about the scale of the whole operation.
Anyway, we took a 'short' walk (Grant said it was like 10 mins but actually nearly an hour..) to the Bridge over the River Kwai. When we arrived it was practically overrun with Japanese tourist climbing off a coach ("hmmmm wierd, we thought to ourselves, considering the history!") The bridge was actually smaller than we expected and to walk across it you have to kind of balance on a piece of metal that is about half a metre wide. There are no railings or supports so unless you look at your feet the whole time it is quite possible you would find yourself in the Kwai! We managed to make it across however and took some tourity snaps etc. At this point the heavens opened (love this whole monsoon season malarky) so we made a hasty trip into a cafe for banana smoothies...mmmmm. That was about all for our trip to Kanchanaburi... the rest of what we saw seemed pretty seedy.... I still can't get over these 60 year old Western blokes with 16 year old Thai girls... all a bit wrong I think!
Byeee for now
