Lindsey and Melissa's Bogus Journey
Kia Ora (Greetings in NZ) again everyone!!
Well, I am sure all of you at home in the cold and snow will be glad to hear that we as well have been experiencing some cold weather. The South Island has welcomed us with some wind and rain, making it a bit chilly....but of course we have no let it slow us down and we have made the best of it all.
After the wine tasting when we first arrived to the south island, we put ourselves into detox and went on the most amzing tramp/kayak trip yet...the Abel Tasman great walk. We were water taxied to our start point in the morning, along the way seeing our first seals and more dolphins. We had a days walk ahead of us. The scenery was amazing, the bluest water we have seen yet. We had to wait for high and low tides in order to be able to hike portions of the trail, so of sourse we had to resort to laying on the beach along the way to kill time....real tough hike huh? Anyways, we eventually made it to our hut where we spent the night. The next day, we met our kayak guide along the beach ready to head off for the day. The sea kayaking was great....we were by far the best wave riders in our group and won the final race at the end...that's teamwork!
After the Abel Tasman, we headed to the west coast. Here we found more rain so we didn't stick around too long. Long enough to dye our hair FROM A BOX (hey, this is a big step for us!). We kind of felt like 14 year olds at summer camp but we look good so whatev.
After a couple of days bombing around, randomly (really, we drove 126km in the wrong direction!) we headed to Christchurch to take in our first big Rugby match. Let me tell you, the game was great but the beer was even better!! See phots, will explain a lot. Rugby is taken pretty seriously down here so the fans really get into it. Some crazy kiwi took us (Ben boy) and showed us a good time that is for sure. We even got into the supporters bar afterwards where the sponsors hang and the players even show up after the game...pretty important gals.
We then headed to Arthur's pass, to attempt to take it easy and do some tramping. We got a place in the cutest little cottage with a fire place and so it was very relaxing. Again, the weather didn;t cooperate 100% but we got a couple of good walks in and only managed to get half soaked!
The glaciers were our next stop along the route south, so we spent a day exploring those areas. Some great scenery but somewhat masked by, again...RAIN!
We have finally made it to Wanaka, where we plan to stay for 4 days. Hiking, biking, realxing, perhaps some night life are in order....so we'll keep you all updated.
