Lindsey and Melissa's Bogus Journey
Hi Guys
So , we did write a long, extensive postcard but for some reason it did not post, so here we go again...
So much has happened since we last wrote, so forgive us if this is a little long.
After the Bay of Islands we headed south to a place called Raglan Beach. This is the most popular surf beach in NZ and there just happened to be a Ripcurl National Surf Comp on while we were there. So we spent a couple of days checking out the surfing, including a night surf comp, which was pretty killer. Haven't done any surfing of our own yet, saving that for Australia.
Next we headed to Rotorua which is a city built on natural geysers. While this is a pretty cool phenomenon, it unfortunately makes the whole city smell like sulfer which is not so cool. While in Rotorua we went to a traditional Maori dinner (the indigenous people of NZ) where we watched some of thier dancing and ate a really good meal. We also went luging down a mountain and went zorbing which consists of filling a huge ball with water and getting in it then rolling down a hill. This sounds completely ridiculous, we know, but is was really fun and like the girls we are, screamed the whole way down.
After Rotorua we headed to Lake Terawera to do some kayaking. We planned to kayak over to a hot water beach which was about a 9.5km trip. Going there was good, however, when we got there the hot water was too hot! We tried to soak in the hot pools but it was so hot it burnt your skin so we decided to head back early. Unfortunately, the trip back was against a huge wind and ended up being the 4km from hell! It felt like for every paddle forward we ended up taking one backwards. Needless to say, we were a little sore the next day!
We then packed up the Travellator and headed down the road to Lake Taupo. We have officially decided that this is our fav place so far and are planning to go back there to get jobs. While there, we took the first day to realx a little, got in a round of golf and then floated down a river with some people we met at the hostel. It was a blast, even did some huge cliff jumps (ok, they weren't huge at all, but to us they were!). The next day was the BIG day. We did a 12000 ft skydive! What a rush, it was unbelievable. Melissa almost peed her pants but she pulled through and we both loved it. We then went out and celebrated the night in Taupo, starting with a free keg.....need we go any farther?
Next day, we sadly left Taupo. Not only were we slow to move, but the Travellator had a slight mishap, a flat tire, which we found had 3 nails in it! Somebody didn't want us to leave I guess!
After a day of recovery, we Frodo and Samwise proceeded on their mission to climb Mt. Mordor. Well, actually, it was a walk called the Tongariro crossing, but we felt like wee hobbitses. It was quite challenging but well worth it, beautiful views of areas formed by volcanic action.
We then spent a day on a farm with some friends of Lindsey's parents. We got a farm tour and much appreciated home cooked meals! So nice after our cooking skills.
We then proceeded to Wellington to catch our ferry to the south island, where we are now. The area we are in is famous for its wines so of course we had to do some wine tasting. So we are pretty much wine conniseurs (sp?), although we still won't spend more than $10 for a bottle/box of wine. Still classy ladies!!
Thats all for now.
Take Care
Love
Melissa and Lindsey
