Nadia's Ecuadorian Adventure
Went to Saquisili market today, one of the best in Ecuador. It was so much fun! Got a bag, a poncho, oh yes, and tried some maize tortillas. They're fried up bu scary looking women in pans with cheese and you get them in a brown bag and they're all hot and chewy and greasy. Romantic description I know, but it tastes like... fried cheese! Fast food is fast food everywhere.
Saw lots of animals and took pictures of all of them, spent a lot of time cooing over the wee ones and they must have thought we were silly sentimental westerners, which we are! Got some veggies and its proper veg, all odd shapes and, get this, dirt! Smells incredible too.
Other cool sights, intestines on the grill, a very stressed and squeeling stuck pig being dragged onto a truck, big cartwheel sized slabs of sugar, beautiful artisinal crafts....
Stopped the way for..... some guinea piggy wiggy! EWveryone at home knows I was stupidly excited about trying this and oh, it was worth it. Never laughed so much during a meal. In fact, the most entertaining meal ever! We were so touristy taking pictures of it. It came whole and defurred. No mistaking what it was!
And the taste? Great! Quite fatty, tender and lots of crackling. Quite a gamey flavour. Alas I wasn't the one to eat the face, or as someone else found, either a testicle or kidney! But is was delicious if a bit boney and I would definately eat it again. So there! I held its bald little paw and ripped all the meat off with my teeth. Try it sometime. You get to shake hands with your food.
