Nadia's Ecuadorian Adventure
Hey,
Well, we're really busy, early mornings and late nights, am getting up at 6 every day!something about the air i think, its really clean. We'vebeen catching up on sleep, I actually went to bed at half nine!
we started spanish lessons today and its one on one, so very intense. Tomorrow we learn to salsa, really hope its not a class of old women like in england! we have a lecture on the economy here later on, the dollar is a hot topic! Elections are on too so we're learning a bit about politics here, therea big 1950s foghorn outside the house that starts transmitting campaign messages really early!
we went to the equator yesterday, the site is horrible and touristy, like Disney'sversion of Ecuador, I'm a bit funny in that I hate other tourists! There was a salsa band though, and it seems like the Ecuadorians love to dance, any time! can now say i have stood in both hemispheres at the same time and balanced an egg on the nail there. Hey, Ive got the certificate to prove it! There's an inca house with a genuine shrunken head too! An honour apparently. We also got to use a big bamboo pea shooter thing.
Went to old town on saturday night, you wouldnt belive how beautiful it is, a mix of colonial and arab architecture. lots of churches there that are built on the equator line and catch the sun at midday, cant wait to say that. theyre built there because the incas discovered the equator somehow and the spanish built their churches on it to impose catholicism on them. Lots of the artwork incorpoates the sun and so ancension pictures have a very spiritual quality!
We got lost yesterday on the bus from hell, like the Willie Wonka boat! It took us up this huge hill and then told us there was no way to get down! Theres a big 10 ft virgin up there so it was worht seeing, not a real one you dirty lot. The sunset here lasts for only a few minutes and you can see it happen, its great! so worth getting lost for that. Monika went spare when we told her, apparently its a really dodgy area! Eventually we got down and it was fine. Monika is great, completly loca and so much fun, we went out for dinner to a gorgeous ecuadorian restaurant and we just laughed the whole time! she ordered us lots of local cuisine, its soooo very good, but no guinea pigs. i dont really feel like sucking the brains out like your supposed to! on the way home we all piled into one txi, there were 7 of us, Elizabeth and Monika looked like Siamese twins sat at the front! It was an ace night.
Anyway hasta luego for now, been sat here ages!
love,
nadia xx
