It all began this time last year, I had made the decision to leave Kenya, not an easy one, one I still question...
The opportunity to become Director of Sport and play football as part of a womens team (30 now, not too many years left!) no better place than Germany and Berlin.
Berlin is surrounded by history, one which we all know something about. I confess my knowledge is minimal, when it came to History lessons I never spent too much time inside the classroom! It's been an interesting 8 months, I can safely say that I am learning more now..
I live in the West, it's more convenient for work. Now the Wall may have come down in '89 however it is still evident that there is still a divide here. The wealthy West.. But its not just this that divides the East and West. The people are also different, the West Berliners are, in my opinion, unfriendly and reluctant to engage in conversation. It is unlikely to find someone who is willing to help you with the language, choosing to 'not understand'. There is no room for flexibility, not only in language but in everything! This is 'the way it is', seems to be the attitude.
I would very much doubt that anyone would get bored in Berlin, there is something for everyone here; arts, theatre, bars, clubs, live music, park & gardens, water ways, sports... fantastic sprawling city.
Now it's been 8 months and I'm a little ashamed to say I have not seen much of Berlin or Germany. however, my job allows me to travel. I might not get to sightsee or be a tourist, but I can certainly get a feel for how different the regions are here in Germany. People, attitude, beliefs. The same can be said for most places, Englands is divided regionally, North American States are themselves like different countries! The various tribes in Kenya all have different traditions.
It may speak loader than words that I spend my holidays back in Kenya! Just returned after an incredible Easter break, it is a place I will return many more times!
I have another 15 months here in Berlin, I see this as a perfect opportunity to travel and not only see and experience Germany but Europe too! Another football season as well!
So, it all begins here, 8 months in....
