Education outside the classroom! The best for of education, get out there and experience things! You can read all the books you want, you can revise for as many exams as you like.. But nothing prepares you better for the world than to get hands on & live it!
We took 33 students aged between 7-15 to Austria, St Michael's for a week skiing! Absolutely priceless! Not only do they learn the skill & technique for skiing or snowboarding... But these kids as young as 7 learn how to look after themselves. Sharing a room, keeping it tidy, hanging up wet clothes after a day on the slopes, showering (granted not many of the boys did this!) managing money, making healthy eating choices (or not!) getting themselves up in the mornings (with a little help, I mean no-one really enjoys getting up!)
Once up, we head to the slopes. The students are left with the instructors... then the real fun begins! Staff skiing! Great laugh..
We head off up the mountiain.. to come flying back down! Steve (PE & Geography) is the best technically, by a long way! Mark (Year 5) beginner! Sian (Head of Secondary) Slow & Steady.. Then theres me! Reckless Risk Taker! Ha..
The mountains are an absolutely amazing place to be, the views are stunning, the snow on the trees fabulous! We were there at a great time of year, not too busy on the slopes but plenty of snow!
As the confidence grows the speed ertainly increases.. The feeling you get when you let the breaks go is incredible! There were obviously times when I lost all control, but somehow managing to stay upright! Great fun.. then there was the moment we took on the moguls! Whooping all the way! We were flying through the trees.. I somehow made it through still standing.. Until Mark came flying.. Grabbed hold of me, his ski pole flying in my face & then launching me in a hole by a tree! Ski's stuck, legs in the air, head in the snow! Brilliant! It was hilarious! A nice fat lip as a reminder..
A classic! I wish someone had caught it on camera!
