After a sleepless night in the hostel due to some wierd guy walking around the dorm room at 3am standing at the end of the bed (somewhat unnerving i think you might agree) I managed toget myself on theBaz Bus.The trip to Saint Lucia was a little shorter than expected as there wasnt many drop offs or pick ups along the way..... infact there wasnt any.
Saint Lucia Estuary itself is a playground for a plethora of wildlife including elephants, rhino, leopard, hippo and crocodile to name but a few. They are brought together in the formation of five different ecosystems including marine, foreshore, lake, bushveld and swamp. Now I may not have got that completely correct but you can sort of fathom that there are a number of different environments in which wildlife may flourish.
For this reason Saint Lucia is a bit of a gem for tourists and remains largely undeveloped. Infact where we were existed specifically for the tourists. Just one road with accommodation, souvenier shops and restraunts which ususally isnt my bag but there is enough here to outweigh that.
My experience of the place wasnt as I may have expected mostly due to the fact that the hostel I stayed at was a bit of a sham. The hostel manager walked out of the place the day after we arrived and the reception staff just didnt have the foggiest so my snorkelling venture to Cape Vidla went out of the window straight away much to my dismay. Although had i been smart I would have just gone straight to tourist information but alas that was my mistake.
So what did i do while I was there for three days you may be asking yourself. Well I walked around the entire place to the beach and back a few times which is a good 50 minute trek. his in itself is worthwhile as there are always crocodilesand hippos to be seen in the estuary. Oh how the familiar grunting of hippos brought back some fond memories. I did have a little concern that they might come running out onto the road. They have been rumoured to do this by the way, fortunately or unfortunately I dont know this didnt hapen during my time there.
Apart from that I spent quite a bit of time with some swedish people playing pool and sampling some of the local bars where there were some interesting people....hmmm wouldnt want to be with them on my own.
All said Saint Lucia is definitely worth a visit as you can garuntee some sort of description of wildlife encounter, just hope its not too up close and personal woth the jaws of a croc!!
