Now then if you are a surfer dude this is sirely the place you should look to come. Jeffrey's Bay has some world class surfing spots including super tubes, now im not a surfer chick and was not ready at that point to try my hand at a bit of surfing. The main reasons being firstly that I was watching the pennies and secondly the hostel we stayed at, Island Vie backpackers is a bit of a party place and we happened to get placed in the dorm right next to the bar.
Now you may have thought that if you closed the door it may muffle the sound of the mucis blaring out of the bar at 3am but no so I stayed up and had a few beers and spoke to Dinesh one of the guys that worked there about this and that, mainly about crazy surfers or wannabe surfers who end up getting themselves into bother. I think I went to bed about 4.30am but I got up at half six...... its a good job im naturally beautifu otherwise I would be an ugly old lady by now (he he he he).
Apart from the good surf Jeffrey's Bay in my opinion does not really have much else to offer. It is getting really developed around the front with high rise blocks and factory outlet stores where you can buy cheap surf clothes. That said I did meet some really nice people. One guy called Jason was Canadian, I think he was drunk for practically the whole time he was there which he assures me is not a regular thing. He merely has got bundled into the whole party culture and I think he was trying to convince himself that this would stop once he left J Bay. He certainly had more patience than any guys I know as he traipsed around after Kirst in the surf shops. You cn imagine we were there for quite some time.
I spent a lot of time resting on the beach although the wind did pick up and I got sandblasted, and for those of you who know me well will know that I have also been known to sit there with my mouth open and so ended up inhaling a fair bit of sand..... nice. The water was really flat so there was not many surfers to watch either darn it.
After a second night at the hostel, not in the partyroom this time but in the bed bug room which they fumigated and then let us in not long after ( a good lung work out!) I set off on my merry way to Port Elizabeth. Now this was an overnight stop only so I didnt see much of it although I have heard it is not that great.
It had been really quite hot as during the bus ride we saw a fair few bush fires, they were not raging b ut slowly snaking their way along the bush, I dont think any rain was expected to the only thing you could hope for is that it would burn itslef out. Of course the sensitive soul in me was worried for all of the animals!!
