HI, Lauren here......
1st things first our bags arrived on Sunday evening so thats all sorted now, and we were then ready to embark on our next part of the adventure our Jucy Crib Camper van... its actually more like a converted Toyota people carrier but its perfect for us seats in the back by day and a spacious double bed by night!! To give you a menal picture its bright green with purple and white graphics so we definatley stand out!!!!
We collected it and then set off for our destenation; Kaikoura north of Christchurch... I drove there and was expecting at least 2 lanes/dual carrige way type road as it was one of their main High ways.... but nope single lane practically the whole way, similar to driving the back way to guildford!! So easy peasy, as soon as we were out of christchurch we were driving surrounded by feilds of sheep, and then a few more sheep and then yup even more, so its no exageration when people say there are alot of sheep in New Zealand. Also drove through mountains which I thought would effect me but you will be glad to now I didnt drive us off the edge of the mountain side, not really any seer drops so was rather chilled scenic 2 and aq half hour drive!!
Arriving at Kaikoura was a bit like going back in time. Its right on the coast and surrounded by a the pacific(?!) i think.. the sea is bright blue green and the sand is black, i think its volcanic around here!!!??? Anyway very striking setting howver the town is queit small but got everything you need (im just in the internet cafe right now!!) We founf the holiday park to camp up for the night, which was easy and very nice good facilities etc etc weve got a gas stove in our Jucy so we cooked a pasta meal and cups of tea and went to bed!!
Now Tuesday we went to get our tickets for the Whale Experience, as that is Kaikouras trade mark... and we boared the boat in the afternoon to go and search for whales (obviously in a group not just me and liz on a little dingy!!) and we found some! So we saw a Sperm whale surface and then dive back down to feed twice and then saw... liz tells me a 'pod' of dolphins, there was loads all swimming wild and doing flips and things, it was a really good experience although there was a sea sick warning and it did get a bit bumpy when we wereout there and there was a poor dad thrwoing up into sick bags for most of the journey.. bless him!
Our pasta the night before wasnt the best of meals so we decided to eat out this night and was very nice although we thought it might be a bit more busy, but the town was very queit, so we are hoping Queenstown is where the livliness begins.
Off now to drive to Hamner Springs a place of natural hot pools and springs :)
Also did some washing, youll be glad to know and I even managed to straighten my hair this morning....fab! This was a long one wasnt it!
Take care xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxp.s the weather is sunny and warm a bit windy and cloudy at times!
