hello- liz here!
well we got on the road to hanmer after a relaxed morning in kaikoura. i took the wheel and lauren guided through the very complex road system they seem to have around here! NOT. very similar to the road up to kaikoura, just long and bendy with not a lot of traffic so nice and easy.. lauren took a piece of video which was funny and we had a fun time singing a long to some classics on the ipod and new zealand radio isnt really up to much!
Arrived at hanmer at 3ish and had a look around.. again not a very big place so that didnt take too long! but we did manage to find the info centre and the place where the hot pools were so we knew for the next day (thursday). also found an indian/asian restaurant who did takeway so we decided that might be a good option for dinner!
Had quite a lazy evening and afternoon at the campsite.. was again very nice and clean with good facilities but not many people around!! so that evening we just went and got our takeaway and ate it in the jucy trying not to spill curry sauce on the cushions......chicken tikka masala by the way, we know its not really in keeping with new zealand culture but both really fancied it!! had an early night after that so we'd be up bright and breezy for thursday.
Woke up feeling good and excited about the prospect of some relaxation in the springs! although both a bit worried about our somewhat pale complexions in comparison to others who'd obviously come from sunnier climates!! both got into our bikinis and made our way first into a large pool that was 35 degrees so quite nice! after a while in there we made our way to the hot sulphur pools which were 41degrees so lots hotter but very nice! although on the way we passed a man who looked at us quite strangely and wasnt at all subtle when he said ... "WOAH... i guess white is the new brown..." haha, it did make us laugh though, we knew we were white but didnt think it was THAT bad. After getting quite pruney and spending a couple of hours in between pools we decided to get out and come back later on in the evening as our pass gave us another entry during that day.
both had a drink in a cafe and then went back to the campsite, don't quite know what we were expecting to do for the afternoon though, i think the springs are the main attraction there and neither of us fancied the other option...a walk through the woods.so read our books for a while and tryed to get motivated to find something fun. remembered there was a mini golf course, but when we looked at the leaflet realised it was shut. what a surprise, everything closes so early its rediculous so that plan failed and by that time we resorted to drive through the town down the road and back again- up to the supermarket to buy dinner. a bottle of sparkly rose, pasta sauce and some brocilli to go with the leftover pasta! went back and cooked that then went back to the springs for an evening soak. was very nice in the dark.. couldnt see the whiteness as much!! after that both had showers to wash the eggyness off (yeah the sulpher in the pools gives off the smell of rotton eggs, yummy) and got in to bed with our bottle of bubbly, a bag of kettle chips and chocolate!! lots of fun and slept very well!!
