Today we walked from the hostel into the city centre, it took us just over an hour to get to Cathedral Notre Dam (Church of our lady), we looked inside and saw a bit of the service, they were speaking French, so we don’t know what was going on, it’s a beautiful Gothic church with stained glass panes and some amazing pieces of art.
It has so many tourists walking around inside, it’s a bit more like a circus than a church, they have a walk way around the whole church, they just let people walk through, they don’t even close for mass, it didn’t seem overly holy to me.
We then walked to the catacombs; a series of underground tunnels (disused quarries) where they dumped the bones of pretty much every cemetery in Paris in 1785, the section we saw was created in 1810. You walk 20 meters underground and then follow the not very well lit tunnel for 2km, about half way is where the bones start, they’ve been piled up on the side of the walk way. It’s definitely like nothing else you will ever see in your lifetime!
When we got out of there, we bought a bottle of wine and cheese and headed to the Eiffel Tower for a picnic and to see the Tower sparkle at sunset, the sun doesn’t set until 10, so it turned into a 3 hour picnic, it was well worth the wait to see it.
We done so much walking, that by the end of the day, not one, but both of my pinky toes had blisters, one of which was actually the size of my toe! OUCH! (but I still love Paris)
