We had a huge day of sight seeing today.
We caught the metro (underground train) into district 1 (the city centre) to go on a walkig tour, the guide Jack took us through the city and showed us most of the tourist attractions.
We started at St Michel's fountain and headed to the nearby police precinct, which was the Nazi headquarters during WWII, There are still bullet holes in the wall from where the French resistance fired at the building, these are the only marks Paris has from WWII.
We then headed down the Seine Canal to Pont Nuef, a bridge, it has all funny faces up the sides of it, which was Henry the 4th's friends, one night after they had all been drinking, he thought it would be funny to get his artists to draw his friends drunken, passed out face's and then get the sculptures to mould them into the side of the bridge, and to this day, his practical joke still stands.
We learnt something interesting about the statues of kings, they are always on a horse, and the stance of the horse will indicate how that king died, when a horse is trotting (1 front leg and 1 back leg up) that means they were murdered or died gruesomely, if the horse is reared up on it's hind legs, the king died in battle, and if all 4 legs of the horse are placed down the king died of natural causes. Interesting..
We then walked through the centre of the Louvre and had a walk around the area, we then walked through Jardin du Tuileries ( a big beautiful park), onto Av des Champs Elysees, past the obelisque, (which the French claim was a gift from the Egyptians, but was actually stolen from them), down towards the Arch De Triomphe (an arch built to commemorate the soldiers that have fought for their country.
The tour ended and then we headed up to the top of the Arch, which was 184 spiral steps to the 1st floor, then another 100 steps to the rooftop, the view was definitely worth the effort. It's said to be probably the best view of the Eiffel Tower from up there, and the symmetry of the city is incredible, everything just looks in place. After we left the arch, we looked around the shops and headed back to the park, we're we sat around the fountain for a while and watched the fish swim and people feeding the birds (by this time the sun was shining and it seemed everyone was taking advantage).
We left the park and headed down to Notre Dam, hoping to see inside while the sun was shining intensely (to get a good view of the glass panes), but it had closed for the day, so we wondered around the area and made our way to the Metro and headed back to our hostel.
We were out roaming the street of Paris for 10 hours and still didn't get enough.
Ah.. J'Adore Paris…
