Once again it's been quite a long time since I wrote.Even though it's only a small town, I feel like there is always something to keep you busy.Things up here in Skagway continue to be amazing.I could not have asked for a more incredible summer contract.
Since I last wrote, I've had many more adventures and tons of fun.Sean and I took a road trip through British Columbia to White Horse, the capital of the Yukon. I flew in a helicopter and walked on a glacier. The Fourth of July couldn't be beat and there have been many other excuses to party, including 80s night at the Brew Co, Chelsea's birthday celebrated on the train, ghost hunting at the theatre and Sean's birthday luau. Finally, I finally took the time to do some more exploring when Brendan and I climbed AB mountain last week.
The drive up to White Horse is a truly beautiful one.It takes about two hours and the views are just incredible.Sean and I set out for White Horse around 9:00 pm, after a Wet Soxs game.Since it doesn't ever really get dark up here, it was the perfect time to drive.Within the first hour of the drive, we had already seen three black bears and one brown bear and taken some great pictures. We stopped in Carcross on our way to look at the "desert" and take pictures of the midnight sun.We watched as the moon rose full behind us and the sun could still be seen in the sky ahead. It was late when we finally arrived and we settled into our room and went to bed.The next day was spent around town shopping and taking in the sights.I was relieved to finally buy a variety of produce and meat, two things that are hard to come by in Skagway. The trip home was great as well, and we stopped by Emerald Lake to take pictures.
One of the great things about working in a tourist town like Skagway is the opportunity to take excursions at little or no cost. One of the tours that I had the opportunity to take was the Temsco glacier excursion. My friend Jessica and I flew stand-by one afternoon and were lucky enough to be booked on a flight.Admittedly I was pretty nervous to fly in a helicopter, as I do not enjoy small plane rides. As we took off, I was relieved to discover that the experience is altogether different from a plane ride.It was very smooth and enjoyable. The views on our tour were amazing. We flew over the canal and mountains along its shores to reach our destination on the Meade glacier. While there we explored and found beautiful glacial waterfalls and interesting rock formations made by the glacier's progress. The flight back was as beautiful as the flight in, and I was very glad that I took the trip.
The Fourth of July in Skagway was too much fun.I began the day by heading out with Sean to watch him run the Skagway Runaround 5K.He came in 9th at just around 20 minutes, which was exciting. After the race, I went to the theatre to get into costume and makeup for the Eagles' float in the parade. Most of our cast rode on the float and we had a lot of fun.Since our float was one of the first, once we were done, we were able to watch the rest of the parade go by.The creativity and effort that went into each entry was incredible.Following the parade, we met up with the guys and burgers at the Eagles' barbeque. The rest of the day was spent exploring the street fair, county fair activities and generally relaxing.
Since there aren't many ways to keep busy in a small town after the boats leave, the parties in Skagway are done right. The night that Sean and I returned from White Horse, Brew Co. held their annual 80s night. All of the girls got dressed up and we had a great night dancing to the music of our childhood and drinking fuzzy navels.Chelsea, the Chilkat dock manager for Haines held her 21st birthday party on the White Pass and Yukon Route train. We had a private car and partied the entire trip up and back down the White Pass summit.A few of the HAPA employees have a ghost-hunting group that has explored many of the locations related to the gold rush.We were invited to participate when they visited our theater.I'm not sure that I believe we found anything, but we had a blast anyway.Sean turned 25 on June 26th, and he threw his traditional luau bash.I went all out and backed a three layer chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting and a chocolate peanut butter glaze. It turned out very well and got rave reviews at the party.Tons of people came and it was agreed upon that the luau was one of the best parties so far this summer.
The most exciting adventure I had last week was climbing AB Mountain.I finally had a day off with someone who likes to hike, so one of our pianists, Brendan, and I decided to hike AB.The trip is a long one, and we actually had to walk away from the mountain to get to the trailhead. The first hour and a half of the hike was spent winding our way along the AB skyline trail. The rest of our hike was the ascent to the summit of the mountain.I enjoyed the challenge of this hike because there were easy sections interspersed with difficult climbing sections. The views from the top of AB were amazing.Even though the Yukon forest fires made the sky hazy, it was still a breath-taking scene.Brendan and I ate lunch at the top, took some time to relax, and then headed back down.Roundtrip it took us about 7 hours, but it was well worth the time and effort.
I hope to update this blog more often, but if not I'm always sure to add new pictures, so come and check it out every week or so.I'm excited to continue my Alaska adventures and I hope you enjoy reading about them.
