Sorry I haven't been very good at keeping my blog updated.I'm pretty good at posting pictures, but the writing takes a bit of time and I've been neglecting it.Things up here in Alaska are great!Since I last wrote, I've been very busy.
The show has been going well. This week was our first week of three three-show days in a row, and I'm working all of them. While it definitely gets exhausting, it also lends itself to character cleanup and further development that I think is very nice. We've had pretty good crowds since we opened, give or take the unusual 13-person audience.Luckily most of the small audiences have been receptive and participatory.
Other than the show, I've been up to many things around Skagway. We started softball last week, and our team, the Wet Sox, won our first game, which was really exciting for me since I've never been on a softball team before. Thanks Dad for making sure I knew how to throw, catch and hit a ball. We've lost the following two games, but we're still having fun playing and it's turned out to be a great way to meet more people around town.
We planted our garden a few weeks ago, and already have greens sprouting.Tonight Jon and Tegan are coming over and we're going to do a little gardening.I can't wait to have homegrown veggies for salads this summer.
I've been continuing my exploration of Skagway and the many activities it offers. Two weeks ago we rode the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad up to the White Pass Summit.A bunch of the Chilkat guys had the day off too, so we made a party of it and brought a whole bunch of snacks, complete with milk and Oreos to eat at the summit. The views from the train were absolutely stunning, and on our way back into Skagway we passed a black bear mother and her cub. That was my first Alaskan bear sighting and it was very exciting.
I used some of my time off last week to take the Chilkat Hike and Float tour.Sean brought me along with some friends that he knew from college and we had a lovely afternoon.I had already done the float part of the tour, but the hike was new to me.It was incredible to think while hiking the trail, that it was one of the only routes used into the Yukon during the gold rush. The trail is pretty steep at times, and it was crazy to imagine that men carried over 100 pounds of supplies over 33 miles of the trail.
This past weekend was our company picnic. We had an amazing time out in Dyea on Betsy's property right on the ocean. The pictures are in the album Choo Choo and Other Tales, and they are amazing. There were rocks to climb right by the water, a nice fire pit/ grilling area and plenty of places to relax and enjoy the weather and the scenery. It was a glorious afternoon.
All in all, I have been truly spoiled by both the natural beauty and the amazing opportunities this summer in Alaska has already provided.I look forward to many activities still on my list, including a much needed jaunt to White Horse with Sean for supplies not found in Skagway, Zip-lining through the rainforest, the Red Onion brothel tour, Glacier dog-sledding and many more.
