There's been a lot going on since I last blogged. Most importantly, we successfully opened the show a week ago today. It was amazing to finally have an audience to work with, although our opening show on Monday was a little anticlimactic due to the limited audience size of six people. As the week went on, the show found its tempo and the audience size grew considerably. Our Thursday shows were quite busy at about 65 and 100 people respectively.
I am having a great time performing in the shows so far.I swing two characters, so sometimes I play Molly Phewclothes, complete with a high-pitched New York accent and a cute curly wig, and some shows I play Squirrel-Tooth Alice, compete with a Southern cowgirl accent and a blacked-out front tooth. It was tough to learn two roles at once, but being able to switch up roles will probably be a lifesaver while doing 4 shows a day for 5 months.I am hopeful that I'll be able to keep the show fresh and new for a good long time.
In other news, I finally had some time off.I was lucky enough to have Friday, Saturday and Sunday off, so I enjoyed a nice extended weekend.Friday Jon and I met for breakfast at Glacial Smoothies, ran some errands including gathering garden supplies, and prepared the garden behind our house. With Jon and Tegan's help, we're planning to grow lettuce, mixed greens, arugula, basil, peas, spinach, onions, garlic, and some assorted flowers. After we got the garden cleaned up and raked, I met up with the Chilkoot boys to ride on their check off runs down the river. It was chilly, but really fun. Finally I headed home and Jon, Tegan, Michelle and I hiked out to Sturgil's Landing.
Funny thing about living in a valley…. you always have to climb a mountain to hike anywhere.I don't think that the Landing is more than four miles from town, but the hike there is more than a walk in the woods.I can assure you that I will never again camp without a hiking backpack. My Jansport wasn't up to the challenge and my shoulders were a mess by the time we arrived. The campsite was amazing. It was right on a cliff overlooking the ocean. We made set up camp and made dinner shortly after our arrival.Jenny, Sean and Mike Fortney met us around 10:30 and we had some drinks and s'mores before turning in for the night. The next morning was beautiful. We spent the rest of the day eating and relaxing and then headed back into town around 6:00.
Later that evening the boys threw a bonfire at the green house. We celebrated Jessica's birthday early and had a blast. The next morning, Sunday, was "be a tourist in Skagway" day for all of us townies.A bunch of us went to Jewell Gardens and had an amazing lunch and watched a glass-blowing demonstration. After lunch we had a bit of softball practice; Skagway has town teams and the Chilkoot and Days of 98 girls play on the "Wet Socks" team.At the end of the evening we watched Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail.
