Hello all!
Learned a new word...wops. Apparently it means woods and Im pretty sure its used by a select number of people, ie the trampers. Last weekend I hung around Wellington, seeing as to go climbing for the weekend it was expensive and a seven hour drive- they left friday evening and came back sunday, so not really worth it. Instead, I stayed at home eating pizza (counter-active to exercise!) and watched New Zealand's Next Top Model. Its my new obession! On Sunday, me, Martha, Lauren, Joe the cheesecake God and Alan went to watch cricket. Did you know those games can go on for five days?? Basically its two guys batting, the teams are dressed in the same colour, and at the end of the day there is stil no winner! This is why I much prefer baseball. Even if Canada only does have one team...RIP Expos. This past week has been hectic, trying to submit assignments and get everything out of the way before I head on my two week easter vacation around the North and South Islands. Two weeks for easter!! This country rocks. Martha and I are renting a car in Wellington, and making our way to Auckland. We plan to stop in places such as Taupo, Rotorua and the Coromandal Peninsula (look at a map!) and try things such as bungy jumping and zorbing (Described as 'yet another stupid thing New Zealanders have invented for tourists'..you roll down a hill in a giant plastic ball filled with water..fun right??) Mike is going to join up at some point seeing as he has some time off, so we're going to wander up to Tauranga where he is from. Don't try to pronounce it, you're wrong. I learned quickly- Maori words are not easy to say with our accent! Not to mention I still can't properly roll my r's...thanks for trying to teach me Tarah!;) From Auckland we're flying down to Christchurch (middle of the South Island), renting a car and making our way across the island. We're definitely going to Queenstown- it is the adventure capital of the world. Its where the Nevis bungy is located (134 metres!!!) Its apparently comparable to Whistler only much, much cooler. It is also one of the places in NZ that gets snow, so good for boarding!..which I plan on trying this summer. The nice thing about having a car is the flexibility to go where we want and stay as long as we want- though we only have ten days. We're camping out to save some money, but its getting really cold!! It only drops to about 10 degrees but with the wind it feels more like 0..and considering central heating doesnt exist it really is coat weather! So we might freeze but it will be sweet as:D Then we fly back from Christchurch just in time for me to make my afternoon presentation for my media class. Really looking forward to getting out of Wellington and being a real tourist. Its amazing how Ive met quite a few New Zealanders who have never even been to the South Island. Considering it only takes a day to get across the whole country, I find it a bit crazy that theyve never tried to see the rest of their country- the South is supposed to be amazing! So look for pictures in a couple of weeks:) The other night I went penguin hunting with one of the trampers..to no avail. (okay not actually hunting, I just wanted to hold one then let it go) Apparently just after sunset, you can spot Blue penguins (blue backs and white fronts) coming in from the ocean after a day of fishing. Sadly none were spotted so I'll have to return some day, I am not leaving this country without seeing one! The dead one from the beach doesnt count.
I am spending Easter weekend finishing up some papers so that I can really enjoy my vacation. Hopefully the weather holds out (no rain!) Its hard to believe I've already been here for two months. Once I get back from the break there is only a month left of classes! Then only 7 months till I'm home:):) Keep me posted on your summer plans!
By now you have all finished classes and are into exams and final papers. Keep trucking youre almost there!! I get to go zorbing:) Dont worry, you can laugh when you are enjoying the beautiful Canadian summer and I am writing my June exams...oh wait I am still in New Zealand and my courses are all pass or fail. Such is life!
Missing everyone terribly, Happy Easter!! If you have any left over chocolate, feel free to send it my way. XO
