Day 3 in Paris. Today we got a late start due to my having a headache. The biggest thing on the agenda today were the Catacombs. We headed out and walked through Luxembourg Gardens at Luxembourg Palace. It was really pretty. The palace houses the senate. Weather today was chilly and windy. And cloudy. Pretty much par for the course. We walked into Montparnasse which is where the Catacombs are located. There was a bit of a que. We had to wait like an hour to get in. More windy spiral stone steps down under the streets of Paris. It was pretty dark and damp down there, and I couldn't use a flash, so a lot of my pics came out blurry. The tunnels were longer than I thought and very cave-like. There was a lot of water dripping from the ceiling....pretty much what you would imagine the catacombs to be like. There were a lot of carvings in the stone along the way. There are no guides, and no quick way to get out if you start to have issues down there. We saw some pictures of corpses as they were placed in the catacombs. Then we hit our first room full of bones. There were a lot of bones! And they are, for the most part, stacked meticulously. Now before we went there, I envisioned maybe a room or two of bones. In reality there was room after room full of them. Hallways lined with them. Floor to ceiling. Very creepy, but also very interesting. A lot of care went into the placement of the remains. The tour took about an hour and then we had some lunch.
After leaving Montparnasse I talked Scott into taking a trip on the metro to see the Eiffel Tower. Public transit is a wonderful thing. Once you get the hang of the different lines and stations it's a pretty simple method of getting around. We popped out of the metro tunnel and the Eiffel Tower was peaking out over the trees.
So this is a really touristy area. There are a lot of warning signs about pick-pockets and buying souvenirs from street vendors. It was fairly crowded and very cold and windy. We decided to get in line to go up the tower. We probably waited in line for 2 hours. Hopped into the elevator and took it to the first level. It was dark outside at this point, and the views were really, really pretty. You could seen Notre Dame way off in the distance and Champ de Mars laying out behind the tower. It was really freaking high. Now we had the option to go all the way to the top, but didn't for a couple of reasons. The waiting was insane....and it was really freaking high. We had to wait around an hour just to take the elevator back down to the ground level. Super busy.
We left that area, hopped back on the Metro and headed back to Saint Germain and our hotel. Stopping for some food along the way.
