After a sleepless night I began a 5 hour ascent up a mountain today. In the words of the young man who was my bunk bed mate, when I asked him if he slept well last night, he replied in his heavy German accent, "It was a nightmare. The Spanish guy was like cutting down a tree." Translation: chainsaw snoring.
The hike through the mountain pass was gorgeous. Early in the morning the cool overcast air was pleasant. the mist burned off to reveal a cloudless stunningly clear sky. The descent was steep and lasted about 3.5 hours. There's a bit more descent tomorrow because I stopped in a village that is low on the mountain slope. The temperature is rising. By mid afternoon my energy drains quickly in the heat. So it's out the door by 6:30 and back down or up the road I go each day.
I'm far past Foncebadon in Villafranca del Bierzo.
Tomorrow's climb will be one of the steepest and the greatest elevation gain will be at the end when the heat is intense. An extra early start is a good plan.

Susan We wish you quiet sleeping companions...
Neil Beautiful photograph. The map tracing your (lateral) progress is astonishing. You've gone so far. I find it interesting to see how many of the issues raised in your blog concern me when cycling: hot days/early starts, steep climbing, varied daily companions, donkeys on the path. Enjoy.
robin by the time you see this you will have done the steep climb- way to go. it sounds like you are getting so much out of this trip in such a unique way.be safe.
Juliana Are you meeting a nice travel partner who is a billionaire!? Sorry this is my first time reading the blog. Love it.
