Thursday 5th April
We go fishing on Lake Taupo in the afternoon. I'm intrigued to see the difference between lake and sea fishing as I've only ever fished in the sea with Dad and I've always really enjoyed that.
It's a nice day for it. A little cloudy so not too hot but no rain in sight. It's a lovely little boat and the 15 horse power Honda engine whips us across the lake.
Apparently Lake Taupo is the size of Singapore and is the largest lake in the southern hemisphere. The only fish you'll catch in the lake is trout and you can't buy it in restaurants as they don't allow commercial fishing, only charters with daily limits so as to maintain the population.
I sit there while Marty sets up the rods at the back of the boat. There's no bait, only lures, and a large lead weight to take the line down around 100metres. Then we sit and wait for the first bite. Simon jumps up while I'm too busy talking (no surprise there then) and reels the first fish in. Yippee.
I have to admit I find it a little odd that we don't get to hold the rods but when the next bite comes I'm up and reeling in this fish. Marty tells me not to haul the rod back and forth - we're not sea fishing now you know! So I slowly reel in a trout gently letting him run when he wants to and easing him in when the line goes slack but he's not big enough so he goes back.
The afternoon goes on like this as we sit and watch the rods from a distance and wait for the fish to bite. We go home with 3 more edible fish and plenty that had to go back - they live to swim another day.
I have to admit it's not what I expected and more what I'd call lazy fishing. But apparently the sea fishing is good up on the north beaches so I'll get to have a go then.
