Sunday 25th March
We have a lovely breakfast in the garden with Jean and Roger. I'll be sad to leave today. Jean shows us around the vineyard and we learn about how to test the grapes sugar levels. They have nets over their grapes to stop the birds getting in. There's also a wind machine and some diesel burners which are used if a frost sets in to help protect the grapes. We meet their two horses and their pony Sammy. They have hens, sheep and a peacock that seems to have adopted them, as well as two cats and three kids. Phew!
We wave goodbye to Cromwell and the giant 3D fruit sign (check out the photo) and head to Wanaka to Puzzling World. It's great fun there. We wander around the maze and into the puzzle rooms and take some silly photo's.
We drive on to Franz Josef Glacier which again has that real ski resort feel to it.
Monday 26th March
We go on a lovely walk which gives us some great views of the glacier this morning. It's all new rainforest in and around the glacier which is wonderful to walk through. We walk over a massive long bridge and notice when we're nearly back to the start that we hadn't passed anyone on the way. It's so remote here, it's lovely.
The sun is shining again so we pack a picnic lunch and head off on the long drive to Westport. We stop at Ross and decide to eat our lunch on the beach. Aaargh - what a nightmare - there are loads of sandflies - and they bite! We rush back into the car and decide it's much safer to eat in here.
We stop off at Pancake Rocks and have timed it just right - it's high tide and the waves are crashing against them and coming up through blowholes in the rocks. What a sight. Spectacular.
