Saturday 24th March
The drive to Milford Sound is stunning, as is the view at the lake. Once again we're blessed with great weather. We meet up with our kayak instructor, Will, who gets us all kitted out in the gear. He then announces that the person who sits in the back of the two man kayak should be able to multi-task as they have to steer as well as paddle. That'll be my job then!
We head out into the lake and paddle around for about 3 hours while Will tells us all about the Maori names for things and the legends about how this place was created. The reason it's called Milford is because a Welshman was blown in there by a storm and he came from Milford Haven. There are often tree-slides where great swathes of them break away from the rock face. This isn't surprising as they are clinging to the rock at 45 degree angles.
We pass a seal lounging on a rock, where he sneezes and itches his nose - such a human action. We have lunch by Bowen Falls (160metres high) but not before two people have been sea sick! Then the israeli's capsize their canoe fortunately right by the shore though.
When we head back out after lunch it's got seriously choppy out there and we paddle against the wind and waves for a long while before turning our backs to the wind and using our paddles as makeshift sails to help us get back to the end of the lake. This is more like it - what fun!
