It's back to the big breakfasts here in Durban again. The restaurant is like a big convention hall with three tables full of food and only three of us here. Although the other two look like they could eat a wilde beest in one sitting..
I'm going to check out one of the local golf courses after breakfast. It's been described as 'badly maintained and perfect for beginners'- sounds ideal for a Monday morning..
Decided on a light breakfast to start off the week- two eggs, three sausages, lots of bacon, fried tomatoes, hash browns, roast potatoes and a few slices of BROWN toast( that's healthy) washed down with a pint of LOW FAT milk, so thinking the milk and toast will balance out the grease.
The hotel receptionist 'Soso', called the golf club and it's closed on Mondays, how does a golf course close?? Maybe the manager is Nigerian. Lots of green and white flags hanging out of the buildings after last night. Think I'll head to the soccer stadium this afternoon, which has the worlds biggest swing, I'll probably just pretend I went on it..
Way too windy today to be swinging across the stadium I reckon. I took the more conventional route to the top if the stadium via the Sky Car. Basically a cable car that takes you up the side of the stadium and drops you at the top for as long as you want. Five minutes was enough, it was blowing a gale..pretty cool view of the whole city though but I miss the wildlife..
Next up was a tour of the Moses Mabida Stadium. I've done a few stadium tours before and basically all I want to do is stand on the pitch but there is always a few detours on the way to less interesting places like the medical rooms for example, have you ever heard somebody say, '' You have to check out the medical room, it's unreal..''- I'm guessing the answer is no.
This stadium, was not much different to any other apart from the adventure swing over the pitch from one side to the other. The biggest swing in the world, a way too big for my nerves..
One other interesting story ( well sort of)was that coca cola was banned from here during the AFCON Cup because Pepsi was the main sponsor. I'm sure some of the locals smuggled coke in during the matches though..
Picked up a couple of rugby jerseys in the stadium( I think) the bulls and the cheetahs, no more all blacks jersey for me while here..once again got lost going back, there was no taxis to be seen so I decided to walk instead, not a wise move in the baking heat without the factor50..nicely sizzled now again after eventually finding my way back to the hotel via the Golden Mile walk along the beachfront, where I somehow ended up..nice beach though, just a bit too windy and hot for me to spend the afternoon there..
I'm starting to realize that the area my hotel is located in is a bit of a dodgy one..two clues-first, police just raided a bar next door and second, I had my own personal bodyguard( hotel security!) escort me to the local shop when I needed some snacks, which was literally a thirty second walk..No more snacks for me after this I think..
It's room service and TV for the rest of the evening, definitely won't be wandering about the streets at night.
May have gotten a bit carried away with the room service, calamari rings for starters along with a Thai chicken salad, followed by a huge burger and chips, and finished with a slice of cheesecake..didn't want to let any of the food go to waste, especially with all those starving children in Africa, oh wait they're here??Maybe I should have thrown my leftovers out the hotel window..? If you're offended by this, well just stop reading it..
