Made it to urban Durban at about 1pm. Looks like a pretty nice city, right on the beachfront as was my hotel. Luckily, it seems I'm centrally located so no more long car journeys for a while! The Albany Hotel looks like a much better spot than the campsite in Kruger. They lobbed me up on the top floor so nice view of what's going on around the city.
Ireland are playing England in the Six Nations in a few hours so for the first time in my life I'm on the prowl for an Irish Bar...
The only 'authentic' Irish bar in Durban, Waxy O' Connors seems to be the place to go...the hotel here has a bar so I'll have a sniff down there first! Don't want to be wandering a city I'm not familiar with at night time- I'm sure it's not wise after a few beers..
The bar next to the hotel will do nicely, few of the locals not looking too happy when I asked to watch the game.. It's African Nations Cup final day, but that starts three hours after the rugby so all good.. Come on Ireland and whoever the locals are cheering on in the AFC!
After watching that brutal rugby match and swallowing six pints of Castle beer, I took the wise move and slipped away..One of the locals,'Mike' was telling me that the hotel I'm in is located in the Nigerian suburb of Durban. I felt like a right plank roaring on Ireland as the bar filled up with Nigerian fans for the ANC final.. I bought a few pints for the locals to keep me sweet, but as more and more of them swarmed in, it was time to sneak off.. I have been promised a free haircut and burger from two of the locals so I'll follow up on that tomorrow..maybe..
