Hi all Kerry here.
So we've just got back from Chiang Mai, was amazing, much better than hot, smelly Bangkok. Nearly didnt make it up there on Sunday though, long story short - tuk-tuking all over Bangkok, chucking it down with rain, (no sides on tuk-tuk, bags on back, we got wet!) couldn't find the place to pick up our tickets. Finally got them with 5 mins to get to train station, make it just in time for the whistle blowing but luckily the lovely Thai people stopped the train for us! Not a fun journey sitting on train for 12 hours (same again tonight though).
So... the main event of Chiang Mai was our trek, 3 days in the jungle. First day just a couple of hours walking, swim in waterfall and walked through a river where my flip-flops fell off and Becky dunked her camera. Camera survived, one flip-flop didnt. But you havent lived until you've walked through a jungle with one flip-flop right? Was a bit of a shock to arrive at our 'hotel' for the night, small village with 5/6 huts, beds were basically a wooden shelf and the shower was a stream. Such a good experience, but we didnt sleep much that night. The second day involved walk for an hour or so, swim in waterfall, lunch of tofu noodles served in a couple of leaves, walking over precarious bridges, more walking, more swimming in waterfall etc. until we nearly lost emily down one waterfall ( saved by a stick). The second village we stayed at was pretty similar but with amazing view of crop fields, the huts actually had mattresses on the floor and there was a shower hanging from a tree in the middle of the village in the field with the cows and chickens! We had thai massages from the local ladies which was lovely until they starting beating us up, pummeling our aching legs so we hurt more after the massage, not sure im a fan of this Thai massage. The next day was the best mainly due to the lack of walking up and down mountains. No, we firstly did an elephant ride, which was a bit wobbly and prickly (the elephant), not quite sure how happy the elephants were, but we kept them fully stocked in bananas. Then we went bamboo rafting down the river. All-in-all good fun, met some great people on our trek and another group of guys who were on another trek who we kept bumping into. When we got back to Chiang Mai we went out with the survivers from the trek to a local reggae bar so all day yesterday we werent feeling too great. We did however have a cookery course booked in the evening, which was really good but we couldnt manage to eat any of it.
So we are now currently in Bangkok again, flew in this morning and train again tonight to Koh Samui. Looking forward to the beach, tan time (well for Becky and Emily).
