On the last night, only a couple of hours before we were due to catch our flight, we strolled back through Old Town Square after a long day on our feet looking at churches, sitting in cafés and visiting museums. To our surprise we were caught right in the middle of an anti-Nazi demonstration.
With the Czech general election having taken place only a couple of days beforehand, we had a basic grasp on the problems that this recovering communist country faced but we did not expect to be demonstrating against them! Neo Nazis all over the Czech Republic had been driving to remove the Romany travellers and black people from the country. All these people were looking for was equality, something which in Britain we may take for granted.
We found no reason not to get involved with the demonstration and even joined in with the Czech chants about equality. Unfortunately, however, we had to leave once the Police arrived and the local news crew became pushy. Our experience of a first anti-Nazi protest for many was a fascinating and insightful experience and also was greatly appreciated by the group of students who ran the demonstration. For more information visit: http://www.hopenothate.org.uk and I hope you can see some of the problems that minorities face all over Europe in this modern age.
