Kylie Caramihalis's Travels
- I landed in Alajuela, Costa Rica, at the Juan Santamaria Airport. It is the largest in Costa Rica, located in the Central Valley Region north of San Jose. We got there at about 2pm with no time to waste. We immediately started heading to the Ruinas de Ujarras in Carnago, Costa Rica, near San Jose. When we got there, we went into the ruins and beautiful gardens. The Ruinas de Ujarras dates back to the 1500s, having one of the oldest churches' in Costa Rica. This was the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Limpia Concepción, which was built in the 1580s during early colonial times. I was told that the local legend has it that an Indian found a painting of the Virgin, which was commemorated by the locals by building the church. In 1833, the village was subject to a devastating flood which led to the government passing a decree to move the village to a safer place, leaving just these old ruins behind. It was a very photogenic place, with lots of parrots.
