GERARD AND KATIE'S ADVENTURE!!!!
What a busy couple of weeks!
Been exploring all the sights and delights of the Californian coast (contrary to popular belief, we're not in Mexico ????????????)
*Left LA (to be honest we werent too upset about saying goodbye) and headed north up the coast to Malibu. Managed to find a relatively cheap hotel just north of the town. Hired surfboards and hit the water every morning and then in the afternoons we loitered around the supermarket and Starbucks trying to find celebrities. Apparently the place is crawling with celeb residents but we didn't see any (although we did see some definite wannabees). Having said this, we did get to see a famous Californian bushfire - it was a few hundred metres from our hotel.
* From here drove up to Santa Barbara for a night to see a Radiohead concert. The concert was held in the Santa Barbara Bowl which is a cute little amphitheatre in the hills behind the town. Was an AWESOME concert! Thom Yorke is a genius. Santa Barbara is a really ritzy town- a lot of rich Californians come here to retire and spend their millions.
* Next up was the Big Sur; an impressive bit of coast where steep cliffs meet the Pacific Ocean. There are also beautiful Redwood Trees here which are the biggest trees in the world. We managed to somehow snag a cabin in a campground which was surrounded by Redwoods with a picturesque river running through the middle of the property. Gerard was in his element lighting a fire every night and cooking meat on the grill.
* Continued up to the town of Santa Cruz famous for its surf and ocean side amusement pier. It is also home of the wetsuit (cos the waters so frikkin freezing but the surfs so good). Got there on the labour day long weekend (which officially marks the end of summer) so it was ridiculously busy but still fun.
* Last stop on a our mainland US tour was San Francisco and it was a fantastic way to finish. What a gem of a place! Did all the touristy things. Hired bikes and rode over the Golden Gate Bridge. Ate clam chowder at Fishermans Wharf. Jumped on a cable car as we hummed the theme song to Full House ("everywhere you look") and nearly got side swiped by a truck. Hung out with all the hippies (aka bums/drug addicts) in Haight- Ashbury. Admired the beautiful and unique architecture. Caught a ferry over to Alcatraz and took a tour of the prison. We even got to meet an ex prisoner (one of the only ones still alive) who signed his book for us about his time in the Rock. That was pretty cool. Oh, and last night we experienced a San Fran earthquake! It was just out of the city and was a 4.0 so nothing crazy but the building that we were in shook from side to side!
We head up to Canada next and spend 10 days in an RV driving around the Canadian Rockies. So, if you don't hear from us, we've probably been taken by a Grizzly………no, really.
Peace from San Fran
