New York, New York……
What can we say? We have just had the BEST time in the Big Apple! Was definitely the one place that we were really looking forward to (mainly me) and it exceeded all our (my)expectations. We were lucky enough to be able to stay with Gerards old school friend Justin (Nugget) and his partner Cristin right in the middle of Manhatten Island, off Broadway right in the middle of the action! Thank you so much guys for making our time there the best and for putting up with us!
Things we did:
Lined up for half a day to do the ferry thing and go to Liberty Island and Ellis Island. Was a pretty frustrating day but very worthwhile. As we were lining up in one of the many lines during the day, some vendor guy (cheekily) told me we should have purchased tickets online, as you don't have to line up at all! Not very helpful for us but for anyone who is heading to the Big Apple soon, it is probably a very valid point to take note of! The Statue was very cool and HEAPS bigger than we imagined! Also went to Ellis Island which used to be the first stop off for immigrants coming into the country. The museum was pretty interesting.
Over the week we also did all the other touristy things (thank you tour guide Nuggs): watched all the action at the Rockefeller Centre, looked up at the Chrysler Building, walked to the UN, went to Wall St, caught a lift 86 floors up the Empire State Building, fought the crowds in Times Square (check out my photo with the Naked Cowboy….hot), paid our respects at Ground Zero (ie construction site), marvelled at Grand Central Station and walked over the Brooklyn Bridge. What an exhausting week!
We even were pretty cheeky and had a kick of the footy in Central Park on the 4th of July long weekend! Not very American at all!
We were also able to catch a Yankees/Red Sox game at Yankee Stadium which was pretty special cos it was one of the Yankees last games there as they are moving to a new stadium. We drank over priced beer, ate hamburgers and sung God Bless America after the 7th inning (well WE didn't). I was just disappointed that they didn't have nacho hats like in the Simpsons! Very disappointed.
Went to Broadway and saw the Lion King which was wonderful! The costumes and set design were out of this world!
Cristin and I went on the Sex and the City tour (Gerard REFUSED to go at all) which was a definite highlight as we got to see all the sights from the TV show and the movie. Fabulous!
I went a bit crazy at Century 21 which is a huge department store that has all these designer brands at heavily reduced prices. Bought a few tops and an awesome Kenneth Cole leather handbag….great.
Tomorrow we are hiring a car from Connecticut (Gerard wasn't too keen to hire it from the middle of Manhatten….understandable) and the plan is to drive through Amish country in Pennsylvania and then carry on to Washington DC.
Enjoy looking at the photos and getting itchy feet!
PS……We also stayed in Montreal, Canada for 4 days before NYC and although it was fun, it was a little overshadowed by New York. It was cool though as it gave us a taste for North American culture and the Jazz Festival was great.
