Howdy!
How y'all doing?
Thought we'd better keep people up to date on whats been going on.
* After our marvellous week in New York we hired a car to explore Pensylvania and surrounds. Was pretty nerve wrecking navigating our way through the highways around NY (even with the GPS we bought) but Gerard did a great job.
* Headed to Lancaster County where there is a significant population of Amish people (30 000 to be exact). It was a very once-in-a-lifetime experience as we felt like we had stepped back in time 100 years. Went on a pretty touristy buggy ride but it was very cool as our guide was a young Amish guy who'd recently been kicked out of home for getting his ears pierced! Was great to hear explanations from his perspective. Also checked out somes sites from the movie "Witness" for all you movie buffs.
* On our little roadtrip we also went to the town of Gettysburg which hosted a huge and decisive battle in the American Civil War.
* Worked our way through to Washington DC. On the first arvo there, we decided to take a stroll to the White House as our hotel was very close. As we got there, some guy handed us a pass to the W/H gardens so we managed to snag an "up close and personal" view of the famous house. Only found out later on that they only let people in 7 days a year! Awesome.
* Probably the best thing bout DC is that pretty much every museum (and there are HEAPS) is free. So we visited a few-the International Spy Museum, the American Natural History Museum and the National Air and Space Museum. All very well done.
* At the moment we are loving the music city of Memphis. This place is rockin' and if you are a fan of any type of music, you would LOVE it! Music is played everywhere....in the street, in bars....you name it. Yesterday we went and visited Graceland which was a pretty out-there experience....definitely very entertaining! We also ventured to Sun Studios which was the starting ground for many musicians-Elvis, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison etc.
* Today we went to the National Civil Rights Museum which is where Martin Luther King was assassinated. We both agree that it is probably the best museum we have ever been to (and we've been to our fair share). Big call, but it was simply fantastic and we spent a good 3 hours there.
Tomorrow we start the big roadtrip - from here to New Orleans then up through Texas making our way to Denver over 14 days. Should be interesting.....
