God! What didn't we do today! As today was Sunday we decided to check out some of the shopping districts rather than try and bustle through a museum or the like. So after I ate a breakfast of hot tea, toast and soup at the hostel (Shannon ate a muffin and 3 cans of green tea) we caught the train to, firstly, Ikebukuro.
Shannon spent a lot of time in Ikebukuro when he last visited Japan so he wanted to go back for a quick peep. We went straight to a gaming arcade when we arrived and ended up spending a hour and a half playing a Mario medal game (like a pokie machine and video game mixed into one). Whoops! After emerging from the dark and smokey confines of the arcade we decided to head on over to our next stop for the day, Shinjuku.
At Shinjuku we were on a quest to find the Square Enix headquarters, the creators of Final Fantasy and other video games. Once we found the egg shaped building we enjoyed a honey and caramel cappuccino and a chocolates parfait complete with chocolate sword before Shannon purchased his fill of Final Fantasy memorabilia. Success!
Next stop was Shibuya where we spent the remainder of the day shopping, quite successfully might I add. We both picked up some good bargains. We had some pizza for dinner and then strolled around for a while looking for a bar. We eventually found one called Bar Moonshiner which was very small and dark. We had two drinks there, the cocktails had impressive moon shaped ice cubes in them, before moving onto the Dubliners Irish Pub where we had another drink. Our next move was going to be karaoke but we decided to go back to our home station first so it would be easier to stumble home. Unfortunately we thought we'd be clever and get off at a different station in our home suburb, Asakusa, only to have to walk about three kms to get back close to our hostel. Mistake. Needless to say, we didn't much feel like karaoke after that. Maybe next time.
