When we arrived in Venice, we headed to our hostel which was a little different than the norm, it was a campground. It was very nice because we had our own bungalow. The place was very quiet and so relaxing. Most of the other guests staying there were complaining because it was so quiet...they compared it to a ghost-town, but we LOVED it. One of the couples we talked to actually cancelled their reservation and chose to stay in a hotel instead...we, on the other had, booked 2 extra nights.
The city is quite unique because, as you may know, there are no cars, only boats. The taxi's were fine, hand-crafted, Italian wood boats (BEAUTIFUL), DHL and any other types of cargo that needed to be transported\delivered was done so by water. No 18 wheelers. The first day we did lots of walking to get our barrings which was nice because on day two, we were able to get around. We viseted San Marco Square and the famous San Marco Cathedral. But more famous than the cathedral may be the massive flock of pigeons there that out number even the massive amount of tourists!! After the touristy bit we stumbled upon a soccer game on the streets between two local pubs. These guys were taking it so serious and even had fancy uniforms for the game. It was for charity, so we ended up donating a few euros in order to sip on some of the champagne they were giving out (its all for charity, you know). The match was good fun.
On the third day, we decided to make a day trip out to some of the surrounding islands of Venice: Murano (an island fanous for glass making) and Burano. The ferry was quite an experience. In Murano, we were able to sit in and watch some of the glass actually being blown for some tumblers. We also browsed all the shops looking at the amazing glass pieces. Burano is an old fishing village where all of the houses are painted radical colors so that the fisherman would be able to find their way home when it is too foggy. It was a very small community, but so neat.
While we were in Venice, there was not a day that passed that we did not have at least two gelatos and about 10 slices of pizza. It is a very good place.
