Arriving in Frankfurt, we wait at the train Station for Stevens German cousin Mario. He arrives in a Porsche 911, so we had to temporarily store our luggage at the train station before we went to grab some dinner. Dinner was nice but the ride to Messel was better. After picking our luggage up (riding with it in our laps), Mario asked if we wanted to fast...and since Germany has no speed limits on the highways, we say yes! In a Porsche 911, we go 300kmph (210mph). It was amazing. We get to Messel in a very short time where he meet his girlfriend Vanessa and her mother Ursula. They opened their home up to us and treated us like royalty. Every morning at 8 am Ursula would have breakfast laid out like it was Christmas morning (an 8 course mean basically). She also made us dinner one night, did our laundry, took us to the train station, gave aus an umbrella and food for the day, stayed up until midnight talking with us and then put a bottle of water outside our door at night.
For day trips we traveled to Heidelburg to tour Schloss Castle and walk through the Old Town. Our second day trip was to Frankfurt. We went to the Old Opera House, walked through Zeil shopping street, stricktly for fun...no shopping went on because it was stores like Prada, Gucci, Versaci, Cartier, Tiffany&Co., Louis Vouitton and more. We also went to Römer, a place litterally destroyed by bombing from WWII. A few of the building still showed some of the damage, but most had been restored. (Kate, however, dropped a few bombs of her own in Frankfurt, fortunatley there were no casualties...only a few lost nose hairs from the fumes!!.) That night we had dinner at a fanstastic Cubano restaurant with Mario and Vanessa and then a wonderful nightcap with Mario and Ursula. Vanessa printed out the times for the train to berlin for us so the next morning we boarded the train, said goodbye to our "family" in Germany and were off.
Our first impression of Berlin was cold, dark and depressed...kind of like the city's histroy. The first night we were there we tried out a pub crawl. The next morning we went to Magic Mountain Climbing center and spent the day Bouldering. And man, do we feel the pain today!! We woke up on Saturday (April 12) and went on a bike tour of Berlin. It was so great. A bike tour was definitly the way to go because there is just so much to cover in this city. Instead of telling you about it, we will show you with the pictures. Hopefully we can get a hostel with free internet in Prague, our next destination.
