Hi!
We arrived in Paihia on Tuesday after a 4 hour coach trip but it wasn't too bad. Paihia is like a seaside town very pretty. We had a wander round the little shops and along the seafront then we decided to get the ferry over to Russell. The ferry we picked turned out to be the slowest as all the rest zoomed past ours went about 1mile and hour!
Russell was really pretty too, not much there and nothing going on but we stopped at a bar by the seafront to have a drink and walked along by all the nice houses. We got the ferry back over to Pahia and got some food supplies. We are currently into Vegemite and cheese sandwiches for lunch at the moment, although it doesn't compare to marmite but we have looked and the prices are a bit too high for marmite over here! Andy cooked Bangers and Mash for tea that night. We booked ourselves on a tour to Cape Reinga the next day.
We left bright and early at 7am and first headed through KeriKeri and to the Puketi Kauri Forest where they have massive straight trees that the New Zealanders seem to be very proud of! We then carried on a bit further and stopped at a cafe to get food!
The scenery was really nice on the way up and we drove through Whangaroa Harbour, Mangonui Harbour and Taipa and onto Cape Reinga. We climbed up a big hill to get some pictures of the views from Cape Reinga and then walked on down to the lighthouse.
Then we drove onto Tapotupotu bay wher you could have a swim and ate our lunch. We had a really sunny day so it was nice there.
Then we headed along the Te Paki Quicksand stream which cars apparently always get stuck in if they stop to take photos, there were a couple stuck when we drove past waiting to be towed. Here there was another chance for sandboarding like in Fiji but these sandunes were even bigger but atleast it wasn't raining this time.
We drove along about 3/4 of Ninety mile beach stopping a couple of times to get out and look around.
We headed back to Paihia going through some more places, Doubtless bay, Parengarenga Harbour and some others i can't remember the names of!
There was a chance for sme fish and chips on the way back if you wanted, so Andy tucked in!
Today we have arrived in Hamilton. Not much here just an ordinary town we are stopping the night before heading onto Rotorua tomorrow for a few days.
Lots of love Kate and Andy xxxx
